This is the age old story of Jesus in a modern-day setting! Beautifully done!! I have always admired Rice and Weber’s musicals, and this is one of my personal favourites. One of my favourite songs in this is the first one...where Judas (the fellow who has been Jesus’ ’’right hand man all along’’ and who eventually betrays him!) is telling Jesus that the way he is going is wrong...and that the people are misunderstanding what he is about etc...! The lyrics, the music is worth listening to!!! The one sung by Pontius Pilate is fantastic too. The one by Mary Magdalene (I don’t know how to love him!) is heart-rending too!!
If you are expecting a holy-holy story and all that...dont see it!! It is a very creative and innovative way of looking at Jesus and his work! It amazes me! I have seen it just once, but I have the music on my system, and boy is it great!
