Unabashed masala Musical

If fantasies are supposed to be wild, then Jhoom Barabar Jhoom takes all the liberties. Alvira Khan and Vicky Thakural, both engaged to different people, bang into each other while waiting at Waterloo station. After breaking the ice, they narrate their colourful and out-of-the-world romances with their respective fiance’s.

Abhishek Bacchan happened to meet Lara Dutta at the Ritz, the same night as princess Diana died and falls head-over-heels in love with her while dancing in front of the Louvre, across the Notre’ Dame and under the Arc de triumph. The romance is sealed with a kiss with the Eiffiel glistening in the background. Paris Perfect Picture!!

Preity Zinta is saved by Bobby Deol in Madame Tussad’s from being crushed under Superman. In his futursitic office and into his grand limouzine, they dance their way into the engagement.

A song continues on and off throughout the movie with Amitabh Bacchan dancing away. A visual tour of Paris sets off and then of London. The first half is entertaining during the AB-LD track, but falls apart with the BD-PZ story. Too slow!!

The second half furthers the ’fantasy’ element and makes you understand that this is a full-bodied ’masala’ flick and so you unquestioningly flow along. Abhishek Bacchan is absoltely super, playing the loud, clumsy yet smart charactercalled Vicky Thukral. Lara dutta is completely at ease and delightful to watch as she carries herself with grace and fits in so well.

They make a mark, while Priety Zinta is looking old and offers nothing spectacular and BD tries hard yet doesnt manage to shun his dead-pan expression!

The film is confident and guiltlessly masala, yet innovative in a few ways (interval, narration, camera angles). Also, this film’s music is what is going to ensure it’s commercial success, without it, failure would have been inevitable. Faults and loopholes in the story, there are many, but not when you decide to sit back, let go and just watch the grand attics !!
