Sir J.J. School of Art, started in 1857 with financial help from Sir Jamshedji Jijibhai. Many great artists are associated with this known institute.
Except the building of printing technology and new building of applied art all buildings in the campus are good examples of Gothic architecture.
Entrance of School of Art building is an Art gallery, where you are welcomed by a bronze statue of a woman going to the temple. Classrooms are on the first floor.
Sculpture and drawing & painting are the two streams in which you can do your graduation. The degree is Bachelor of Fine Art. It is a five-year course after 10th. First two years are foundation and common for Fine art, applied art as well as for Sculpture. Next three years are for specialization; here you have the choice of selecting any of these streams. Alongwith these courses Institute have courses in interior designing, ceramics and pottery, textile designing.
Three well mentioned libraries provide enough material to quench your thirst. You get all the freedom required for work. Lush green campus, enough open space provides the atmosphere for your ‘sadhana’. Everything is artistic including the college election campaign.
1984 to 89 I was associated with this institute and I am proud of being a JJ student. Those five years of JJ I will remember for my life. It is one of the best institutes in Asia. Students from all over India as well as from neighboring countries including Nepal, Mauritius and some African countries comes here for studying.
