Years ago there came a movie called Mere apne, starring the handsome vinod khanna in his youngster days, looked far more better then srk, then you had the villain shatrughan sinha playing chainu the gangster, then you had asrani, paintal, danny on the side to be supporting actors and comedians, the movie was directed by gulzar and it is one of the classic movies. Josh has the same story as mere apne, but added a little love story in the middle, and the gangs have names eagles and bichoo’s everything else remains the same and meena kumar is missing as well.
This movie is also based on a hit american movie called westside story, the love story is taken from that movie.
Josh is directed by mansoor khan the guy who gave superhits like qayamat se qayamat tak, jo jeeta wahi sikander, akele hum akele tum.

The movie opens in vasco a small town in goa. Then there they show two youthful gangs who cannot see eye to eye. There are two gangs one is called eagle run by max(srk) who dislikes the new hindu entrants in the town. The other gang bichoo is run by prakash (sharad kapoor). Bichoo gang cannot enter the eagle gangs area, because area are divided between the two eagles gang gets beat up for entring bichoo gang’s area and bichoo gang gets beat up for entering eagle gang’s area. The two gangs regularly have showdowns on the streets of vascowhich are ended by the arrival of the police wala (sharat saxena) or the local priest would stop them.
Prakash’s younger brother returns to town rahul(chandarchursingh) after completing his studies in mumbai. rahul is an honest person, who doesn’t seem to get along with his brothers violent principles. One day rahul see max’s sister shirley(ashwaryia) and it’s love at first sight. Then rahul changes his plan to go back to the city and decides to live in vasco by opening up a pastry shop. At first shirley doesn’t like rahul, she even ruins his pastry shop by plating a basket of rats in his shop, but slowly she starts to like him and then they sing a couple of songs as well.
Max and prakash doesn’t like idea of shirley and rahul they decide to separate them and even threaten to kill shirley and rahul. Once prakash and his goons plan to kill max with his own gun ti make it look like it was suicide. They trace max to a abandoned graveyard and begin tu put their plan in action. Rahul finds about this and goes behind them and by the time shirley and rahul arrives there, theres a dead body of prakash and maxi s arrested for the murder.
Anumalik’s music is pretty good, sailru sailare is well sung, shows the enemity of the two gangs. APun bola sung by shahrukh khan is probably one of the worst songs, s ever there was no way he matched to aamir khan’s song called atti kya khandala which was a bigger hit. Shahrukh khan overacts while singing the song. hai mera dil is nice song as well and mere khalayon ki malika by abhijeet is the best. There’s one spanish song as well.
Mansoor khan does a nice job, but it’s not like his usual work, he did in his last movies, he couldn’t get the cast to perform as well like he had aamir going strong on his last three movies. Aamir basically was the right choice for playing max I don’t know why he chose shahrukh this time. I didn’t find the dialogues to be that good, some stupid lines were used and given to shahrukh like apun tere thobre ka geography begard dalega.
Performance wise, chandchursingh has never able to impress since maachis, in this movie he even wears orange pants and blue shirt. Ashwaryia doesn’t look like srk’s twin sister, but overacts in the whole movie, and even laughs like madhuri, if the movie was made in the 90’s I would have loved to see madhuri play this kind of role she’s got perfect timing for comedy as well, where ashwaryia falls flat on her face in comedy. Shahrukh khan as max doesn’t impress at all, he doesn’t look the character shown in the movie and he looks like some gaane bajane wala with a band around his forehead. when he talks in mumbaiya lingo sounds funny, these kind of roles only goes to people like aamir khan, arshad warsi, manoj bajpai and sanjubaba. Priya gill should just stick to punjabi movies, anyone ever watched her movie bade dilwala enough said.
Showstealer was none other then sharad kapoor, he wasn’t given enough appreciation for this role of a villain, but he was outstanding, if you thought he was good in dastak he gives powerpack performance in josh as well, he has got a nice voice, but he never was recognized in bollywood, but he is surely is a good actor and this performance deserved a villain award, although I like sunil shetty, but shetty never deserved the award for dhadkan for villain, he wasn’t a villain in the movie he was the main actor as well, this was sharad kapoor’s award.
overall a decent timepass.
