Joy Mangano is the humble-roots woman who became an industry of household inventionsIt’s ridiculous. “Joy” doesn’t work entirely, and the structure set up so clearly in the opening sequence is dropped early on for no apparent reasonstarts as a fable about a little girl who liked to make things, narrated in an epic tone by her loving grandmother Mimi saw the film I read the 1st draft of the JOY script from 2013, written by Annie Mumolo
And it made me cry on page 80, it had everything, it had a coherent story, beautifully designed characters, and a classic tearjerker moment or 3 and I loved it. When I screened the film, I felt like I was on acid for the first 30 minutes, after all, how could the God we know as David O’ Russell ( who made me cry with Silver Linings) have made a murky, confused, wretched story with pointless peripheral characters, an idiotic and bizarre fictional soap opera thread, and even coax the creepiest performance ever given by Isabella Rossellini? I must be on acid, it’s much more plausible an explanation… I can’t be seeing what I’m seeing, some of the best talent in Hollywood being utterly wasted as they collect big bucks to do this absolute tripe. It left me angry, I can tell you. IF you want to see JOY and truly enjoy it, you will have to see it in your head, by reading the original script
