Judwaa 2

This is an almost same version of the 20 year earlier film made by the same Director-Producer team, but with a new star cast and dialogues plus gags which are of current times. David Dhawan has also retained the pace, pitch and tonality of the film as is, but only changed the setting to London. Some scenarios are as silly and illogical as the previous one. The film is a tribute to Salman acknowledged by his cameo at the end. Varun Dhawan excels in portraying both Prem and Raja. He has an endearing quality in his performance. He truly is the current version of Govinda with some flair of younger Salman. Jacqueline and Tapsee provide the glamour with minimal detailing done of their characters. Tapsee has done serious attempt to alter her image. Rajpal Yadav does well stepping in the role that was played by Shakti Kapoor. Anupam Kher doesn’t stand out in the role portrayed by Kadar Khan in earlier version. In fact, he was much better as the hawaldar in Judwaa. Rest of the supporting cast do a decent job. But for someone who has seen the earlier film, the magic of the supporting cast-Kadar Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Satish Shah, Tiku, Bindu is missing in this one. Also Jacqueline’s role is not half as memorable as that of Karishma Kapoor. All the four songs are quick tapping numbers supported by very good choreography. The kids would love this roller coaster ride of comedy sans any logic. In any case, going into a David Dhawan film looking for meaningful cinema itself is a contradiction. The current youth will also find this kind of masala entertainment palatable and enjoyable. However, audiences of the previous Judwaa era who enjoyed and liked that one as well as similar other comedy/masala movies of David Dhawan may not enjoy this one as much - as some amount of magic provided by supporting cast characters to the fun and madness is missing as well as the naughty kid in them may have been long lost or suppressed. Nevertheless, quite a few gags are very enjoyable to this set of audiences too. Overall, a good, fast paced comedy with all the ingredients of masala entertainment and great performance by Varun Dhawan. His fans will lap it up and at the same time hard core film critics will relish the opportunity to give low ratings to a film after a long time.
