Prostitution has been discussed so many times in Bollywood movies. How prostitutes live, talk and behave has been shown umpteen times in Hindi cinema.Earlier there was Umraao Jaan, today it is the modern prostitute Julie. The film Julie has been making headlines ever since its hot trailers have been on air.Neha Dhupia`s dare bare scenes have become talk of the town. She appeared topless in this film [no frontal nudity!] and she has done so many hot scenes with Sanjay Kapoor. The question which is in everyone`s mind regarding this film is that is it only a skin show of 180 mins. or is there something more to it.Well, the film kind of succeeds to convey its message, but fails to register any kind of impact on the audience.
THE FILM:
N.R Pachisia`s Julie, directed by Deepak Shivdasani, stars Neha Dhupia, Priyanshu Chatterjee, Sanjay Kapoor, Yash Tonk, Kiran Kumar and Achint Kaur. This is one of the most controversial films in recent times because of its hot scenes which is a USP of the film.Other than that, we will be watching Neha Dhupia for the first time carrying the film on her shoulders after her lackluster performance in Qayamat. Will she be able to carry off the film on her shoulders?
THE CHARACTERS AND PERFORMANCES:
1.Julie(Neha Dhupia):Julie is a modern call girl who chose this profession because of her circumstances. The girl who was so simple and innocent, once upon a time has now become a daring and an intelligent person.Neha Dhupia shows lots of skin, in some scenes. There is lots of bare back show by this lady but coming to her acting, she has shown signs of improvement over her previous film ?Qayamat?.She does a fine job, playing the main character of the film but you will definitely feel that this is her first step towards acting and she has a lot more to learn. This is a good effort by the actress and let`s expect that she will improve herself in her forthcoming projects.
2.Mihir Shandilya(Priyanshu Chatterjee):Mihir is the most eligible bachelor of India. He is a rich and a successful man whom every girl would be wanting but he is in love with a call girl, a prostitute.Priyanshu Chatterjee impresses as Mihir. He gives an excellent performance and his dialogue delivery is amazing. He does a wonderful job towards the climax of the film, when he speaks about the importance of having a prostitute in our society.
3.Rohan(Sanjay Kapoor):Rohan is a very selfish person who uses a simple girl, Julie, for his benefit. He plays with her emotions and doesn`t even care about the lonely girl.Sanjay Kapoor as Rohan does what he has been doing in all his recent films-giving sweet smiles and acting in a weird manner. His character is also not so interesting so he does a fair job.
4.Neel(Yash Tonk):Neel was Julie`s first boyfriend with whom Julie dreamt of getting married but he dumps her as soon as he gets rich.Yash Tonk gets no scope to perform at all and when he meets Julie in a hotel room, his face expressions are horrible.
Achint Kaur does a good job as a TV show interviewer, Tara. She doesn`t get as artificial as Simi Garewal.Kiran Kumar has nothing to do.The woman who plays the beauty parlour owner/girls supplier does full justice to her role.
THE STORY:
The film starts with a girl Julie who wants to appear on a TV talk show on a channel called CTV and wants to tell everyone including her lover and his family, that she is a call girl, a prostitute by profession. This confident and outspoken girl Julie was once a very simple and a normal girl, like anyone else. Due to circumstances, she opted for such a job.Julie used to live in Goa with her father and she had a boyfriend Neel whom she loved very much. She also wanted to marry him but Neel wanted to be successful in life. When Neel becomes successful he leaves Julie alone, without caring about her.
A heart-broken Julie leaves Goa and goes to Mumbai where her best friend Dingy, who is an air-hostess, lives. There Julie finds a job of a Personal Assistant of an industrialist. For this job, in a city like Mumbai she has to change her look, so she goes to a beauty parlour with her friend Dingy. Dingy tells Julie that the owner of the parlor is a supplier of prostitutes. Little does Julie know, that one day even she will become a prostitute. At the place where Julie works, she finds Rohan there, who becomes her friend and from a friend to a lover but he ends up betraying her. He tries to sell Julie to a client, whose name is Wadhwa.
An upset Julie goes to the beauty parlor`s owner and decides to become a prostitute. After sometime, she falls in love with a very successful bachelor Mihir Shandilya. Mihir proposes Julie for marriage and Julie accepts it. Later, Julie feels that she should reveal her identity to her to be husband and his family, so that`s why she wants her interview to be telecasted on TV. After knowing the truth, will Mihir and his family accept Julie?
THE WORK OF THE CREW:
Deepak Shivdasani, who gave a dud like ?Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke?, last time, does a better job with ?Julie?, as a director. There are some interesting moments, like the one which comes towards the start of the film, where Julie goes to the talk show interviewer, Tara`s office and when a man asks about her profession she declares that she is a prostitute, infront of everyone.Other interesting scene is the one where Julie`s talk show finally begins and when she tells on the TV programme that Mihir Shandilya wants to marry her, a controversy begins. From then, the film gets interesting.Enough of the plusses, but now let`s come to minuses.
The director fails to get the viewer`s sympathy towards Julie`s character, because throughout the movie, which is mostly in a flashback, you can`t understand what happened and why? Many scenes could have been executed in a better way. When Julie gets to know about Rohan`s truth, she just comes out and screams for 3 seconds, so it didn`t give viewers the feeling as if there was something terrible happened to her.As a result, there is no sympathy towards her.The flashback is throughout very boring and the film gets gripping only towards the climax when the talk show finally begins.
