This is really complicated. I feel the same way about this movie that I do about “The Avengers” films — pointless, soulless entertainment. It’s pretty clear that I’m both a DC fan and a Zach Snyder fan when it comes to comic book films. That’s not necessarily an “either/or” rule. I love “Winter Soldier” and the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films. I liked where DC was going which put me in the distinct minority of movie goers who was fine with macabre, deconstructed, brooding superheroes. It also stands to reason that I would lose, when push came to shove, over the future direction of a film franchise because people vote with their wallets and Warners needs each film to make a billion bucks going forward.
That doesn’t mean I have to pretend to like the direction or that I’m thrilled with the changes. This shouldn’t be confused for a hateful diatribe. The movie was fun. It kept me engrossed. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t spend a reasonable portion of the film rolling my eyes. What’s worse is that this film kept the part that people hated most about BvS and Suicide Squad: the short montage-ey clips in the beginning before the plot got going, things ( frankly, despite being okay with) , I could honestly have done without.
