I bought a swanky looking Home Theater system by JVC during one of my trips to SIngapore last year.
The litle thing somewhat stood out amongst the rest and had a very catchy look and display which caught my attention and I almost fell in love with it right then and there. Weghing over 50 kgs, thats what it seemed like, I carried it all the way to the airplane and then to my home and first thing I wanted was to set it up.
All set and installed, I switched it on and we were all floored by its sound and effects, it was all so thrilling.
It was only after using it for some time I started having problems where it would read some DVDs and VCDs and reject some outright ejecting them. Gardually some even stopped going in altogether and would be hanging midway when I called a mechanic to check it out.
It was then I realised that there are two types of mechanisms for loading, one which has rollers and the CD going in (normally you those in car systems) and the other has a tray which comes out and goes in. The tray mechanism apparently works better in our kind of conditions where we have lots of dust, in the other one there are rollers which get dirty and are not able to roll the CD all the way in and hence my problem.
Also the entire erquipment is made in such a way that it is practically not possible to open it for servicing easily and cleaning of these rollers.
So while buying a DVD player, this is one thing one should look at along with the servicability options, how easy it is if you had to do it yourself.
