Roses for Kaante!

Kaante is certainly one of the better movies made by Bollywood. Of course it is a remake of one of the better Hollywood movies...but so what. It is a technically proficient and visually excellent film.

For someone who follows the technicalities of film making as well as its aesthetics, Kaante is certainly a treat.

First a comment of the acting. Amitabh is at his usual best. Sunil Shetty is again quite predictable. Lucky Ali is cool. Kumar Gaurav certainly needs to work harder...yes even after all these years. He has improved his looks but still lacks confidence. However, Sanjay Dutt is exceptional. Finally, Mahesh Manjrekar has already received so many accolades for is acting that I don’t wish to add anymore. Yet, I would like to say he is a great discovery for the film industry.

The screenplay has been complemented nicely with slick editing. I particularly enjoyed the filter used for shooting the entire film in addition to the cinematography.

Overall, it is a very bold movie, bold not only it the dialogues and theme, but also because it does not heavily depend on heroines. It has an arty look and execution so it naturally does not appeal to a large audience. Sanjay Gupta is certainly a very talented director!
