Engaging in parts

The story revolves around Dev Saran (Shah Rukh Khan) and Maya Talwar(Rani Mukerjee) who are married to differenet people but are not happy with their marriage. Dev constantly holds grudges against his wife Rhea Saran (Preity Zinta) who is a hardworkign wife with a top notch job. Maya however does not feel any connection with her husband Rishi Talwar(Abhishek Bachchan). From hereonin the story focuses on the union of Maya and Dev, and how far they go in their relationship. The question that is yearned by many is if Dev and Maya break off their marriages and come together.

Inspired by Closer, the film holds your attention from the very first sequence. The rift between the two couple is established at the very outset and the execution of these scenes proves director Karan Johar’s command over the medium. The first half is exciting; it is laced with humorous and sensitive moments, all handled with finesse that film of this genre demands..

The interval point is among the highlights of the film. The scene where Abhi confronts Rani why she is unable to have a child is remarkably shot. This point raises the expectations for an equally engrossing second half. But the film loses ground in the second half.

The fault lies with the script of the film -- the basic premise of the story is weak.Dev is in an extra marital affair because his wife was always busy. In the 21st century we are all busy people, that doesn’t mean that we go and have affairs and cheat on our spouses.Maya on the other hand, what was her problem? Okay fine she did not feel love for her husband. But then, If she did not love Rishi, then why did she marry him? If she can have an extra-martial affair I’m pretty positive she can tell Rishi she does not want to marry him.

Even the climax leaves a lot to be desired. The divorce seems like a shortcut to end the story fast.

Yet, it cannot be denied that KJO deserves full marks for deviating from the run-of-the-mill product .

Music is quite pleasant. The film has two lilting numbers – ’mitwa ’and ’Rock N Roll’ – and the picturisation of the latter is indeed laudable. Cinematography is praiseworthy.

The weight of the film rests upon the proficient shoulders of Rani, who infuses life in her character.

SRK enacts his portions with admirable ease.Preity is a pleasure to watch. Abhi is appropriate. . Amitabh is tolerable.

On the whole, KANK is a welcome change from the typical Bollywood films produced in the recent times. The film has its share of flaws, but the fact cannot be ruled out that it is a bold film and dares to venture into new territory.
