A fine entertainer

KANK is a passionate love story and the anguish the lovers face though they are married to someone else. The film starts off well, but is hardly convincing in the first half. The fault lies in the fact that the comic portions involving Amitabh are loud and do not sustain the viewer’s interest. Even the trick that SRK and Rani use to save their marriageis far from believable. But the film undergoes a radical change in the post-interval portions when the lovers are compelled to go two separate ways.

Karan Johar gets a tight hold on the goings-on in the second half of the filmThe film moves at a brisk face in these portions and the only factor you miss is the lack of a hit song to compliment the goings-on. . The marriage of Abhishek, followed by a conversation between Rani And Preity keeps the viewer’s interest alive. The climax is equally well shot

KJO succeeds on two levels – One, he deserves full marks for extracting wonderful performances from the cast and two, he has been successful in holding the audience attention throughout the second half.Karan handles the dramatic scenes with maturity, displaying a flair for subjects that have ample scope for romance and emotions.

.

But the film is extremely lengthy in both the halves. A few sequences in the first half and at least two songs in the second half, can easily be deleted to make the proceedings concise. What could’ve been conveyed in a few words and less footage has been unnecessarily stretched like a rubber band.

SEL’s music is ear pleasing. The numbers that make pleasant listening are ’Rock’ and ’Party’. The latter is the best song of this enterprise. The picturisation of both the songs deserve special mention. But the lack of a hit song is sorely felt. Dialogues are fantastic and go well with the mood of the film. Cinematography is first-rate. The locales of NY make the film rich and add gloss in its visual appeal.

Abhishek is effective in a role that requires him to emote through expressions. Amitabh does a commendable job. His sequences with Kirron Kher bring an instant smile though he does tend to get loud as mentioned earlier.

SRK is commendable. Preity registers a strong impact. Rani is strictly okay.

KANK is a fair entertainer with an ordinary first half and an engaging second. However, a theme like this may find takers in the metros, but universal acceptance seems difficult.
