Hi friends,
After a mind boggling number of reviews (106) on MS and the overall verdict being mixed, I thought its better to watch the much hyped KANK for myself and give a review if possible.
Well friends, before watching a movie, I used to trust Mr. Taran Adarsh, the renowned film critic. His reviews always seemed balanced and giving the real picture. And thus, when I saw KANK rated as four and a half by Mr. Adarsh, I had no doubt that this movie is worth a watch.
But Mr. Adarsh, I am sorry, but I am extremely disappointed 1. By the movie 2. By your review.
Either Mr. Adarsh, you are biased towards the Yashraj and Johar camp or you actually need a break.
Well friends, coming to the movie. Mr. Karan Johar, the great director of Bollywood had said that KANK is his masterpiece, it is off the beaten track, a hatke stuff, a bold movie and what not. Mr. Johar, if this is what you do when you make hatke stuff, we are more happy with your candyfloss brand of cinema. Meaningful cinema is definitely not your cup of tea.
Plot:
The plot, if any, is cliched to the core and has innumerable flaws.
Dev Saran , a professional footballer in New York (Can anyone tell me a reputed football club in the US), whose career is cut short by an injury. He becomes an irate individual and moreover feels pangs of jealousy over his wifes successful career ( remember Abhimaan, how cliched can one get).
The other couple, Rishi and Maya are facing their own marriage problems. Maya is a frigid wife and Rishi, the loving husband. Maya doesnt love Rishi as much as she feels she should ( Now for Gods sake, what is this crap?)
Sexy Sam is Rishis whoremonger father(An extremely ill written character) played by The Big B. Mr. Bachhan, please avoid such roles in future.
Dev and Maya walk out of their respective marriages and meet in the end in a cliched train sequence.
The movie reminds me of the innumerable Kekta Kapoor kerials kunning on Kelivision nowadays, where the story (if any) takes leaps by few years every now and then. Same happens in KANK.
very honestly, if I had not decided to write a review on this movie, I would have walked out of the cinema way before the intermission.
Performances:
Shahrukh as Dev Saran is as usual as SRK. Shahrukh, please do more roles like those in Swades or Paheli. KJ and Yashraj will ruin your talent.
Preity Zinta does justice to the ambitious wifes role. However, the character doesnt leave an impact.
Abhisheks character is the best written one among the lot. And he performs quite ok. He needs to work upon his anger emotions which seem too artificial. Also, KJ and other directors, please avoid giving Abhishek dance numbers, it makes for a pathetic scene.
Rani Mukherji as Maya, though gives a top performance, but the character itself is so badly written, you shouldnt expect much. Can anybody tell me why she walks out on Abhishek.
Amitabh Bachhan though has been given a pathetic character to play, he does it with elan. If not for Amitabh, this character would ve appeared worse. Mr. bachhan, we dont expect you to play a characterless old man who sleeps with all sorts of hookers more than with his own wife.
Kirron Kher sleepwalks through her happy go lucky punjabi woman. Absolutely typecast.
Other characters are not worth a mention.
Music:
Talking about the music, which is strictly average. However Tumhi Dekho naa rises above the ordinary and is also picturised beautifully. Other tracks are just ok if compared to KHNH and even to the mediocre music of K3G and KKHH.
Cinematography:
Cinematography is top class and the locales of New York have been captured beautifully and aesthetically.
Overall, KANK is strictly avoidable; and if you have some great patience and will power and if you want to watch something which actually doesnt exist and defies all logic and intelligence.... go watch KANK.
Last but not the least, the 3 1/2 hour running time of the movie really makes it get on your nerves.
Comments awaited.
