KANK is one of those love stories that has dollops of emotions. It moves you on various levels, but has its share of snags as well.
Firstly , the emotional moments in the film are heart-rending.As a director Karan Johar succeeds in giving the film that certain sheen . Even otherwise, the mature strokes of a director are visible in every frame. For, the emotional sequences strike a chord with the cinegoer.
The film boasts of an international look. visuals captured by the cinematographer are stunning. .The songs are ear pleasing, the picturisation is eye-filling and of course, they have been aggressively promoted by the producers. Dialogues are brilliant. Production values are lavish.
However the film is slow-paced and moves at a leisurely pace throughout. If the story penned by johar is novel, his story telling shouldve been fast-paced. The film tests the patience of the viewer in certain scenes, thanks to its tempo. Also, it has a classy look at most times, which will mainly appeal to the elite. In a nutshell, the film needs to be trimmed to improve the pace of the goings-on.
The performances in the film are extraordinary. Theres no refuting the fact that KANK belongs to Rani. The actress looks every bit the character she is portraying and the effort is laudable. She essays the multifaceted character with flourish and scores every time she comes on screen. There are innumerable sequences she leaves a mark in, but the ones that can be singled out are when she breaks down after being left by Abhishek and in the one in the climax, when she runs behind those train.
Srk excels in a role that demanded histrionics. The anguish, the agony, the distress his character goes through comes across exceedingly well.
Abhishek enacts a complex character and takes to it like a fish to water. The frustration , the illusion that he carries on his face have been projected brilliantly. He is outstanding in the latter part of the film.
Preity is but splendid and this performance should take her places. Amitabh is competent. His death sequence is well executed.
KANK has all it takes to appeal to an avid cinegoer whos thirsting for wholesome entertainment. Recommended!
