The title that is listed above describes in a nutshell the plot of the movie that has, by all accounts, achieved immense box office success and provided a truly great cinematic experience. The movie has been said to gross over Rs.72 crores in the first week itself which is a first for a hindi movie. The movie is said to be based in New York City where the movie was filmed.
Dev Saran (Shah Rukh Khan) is a footballer who is left with a limp after a rather unfortunate accident. His character is fundamentally flawed, as can also be said about the other leading characters in the film.He is married to Rhea Saran (Preity Zinta) who holds a senior position at a fashion magazine. Dev suffers from what could be interpereted as an inferiority complex and the tension in their relationship is highlighed by the constant friction in their conversations.
Maya Talwar (Rani Mukherji) is about to be married to her childhood friend Rishi Talwar (Abhishek Bachan) albeit unhappily, when she has her first chance encounter with Dev.
The years pass by. Dev has a son Arjun and as described earler he has an accident shortly after meeting Maya. Maya has no children. These are the stories of their progress on the marital front.
Mayas relationship with Rishi is more like that of a caring mother, and she continues to struggle in her relationship, where she is depicted as a caring cleanliness "freak".
Sexy Sam (Amitabh Bachan) provides a character who is flamboyant yet repentant and introspective. Needless to say he carries off the role with effortless ease.
It would be unfair to reveal the plot in its entirety. However it must be said that the music is mesmerizing. Mitwa and Rock and Roll Soniye are two tracks that particularly caught my fancy.
This movie explores heretofore uncharted territory for a Hindi movie. But it must be said that Karan Johar causes every cinegoer to think as to how he / she would have handled the situation that he presents. That is where this movie scores over others. It prompts you to think (for a change). The movie captures your attention for the full more than three hours of its sojourn.
Kudos to Karan Johar for giving the avid Hindi movie goer a treat for the senses.
Way to go Karan.....
