The best way to fool and attract the Indian audience is to put lots of unwanted emotions, rona-dhona, love and respect for elders and also for your bharitya sanskriti and parampara and you have a winner on hand and thats what KARAN JOHAR has done so efficiently in his much awaited magnus opus KHABHI KHUSHI KABHI GHUM.With K3G we are back with the suger coated characters devi jaisi ma, bhaiya-bhabhi, devar(the list is endless)with lots of songs, sacrifices and pyar mohabbat happening in between.K3G turns out to be your typical hindi film(as I had thought it to be)coz people like Karan just dont have the vision to experiment, they are too happy rehashing their earlier hits and all the numerous family dramas and thats what made me dislike the film.
STORY:I will probably not go into the story(if you can call it so)coz it is typical of hindi films which has been done to death.Ultra rich father doesnt want his son to marry a poor girl..........
DIRECTION:This is Karans second film after K2H2 and we see absolutely no novelty or freshness in the film.He has balantly copied scenes from his earlier hit and also hum saath saath hai.The direction is shoddy and very predictable with no originality at all.Since the film is a emotional family drama it fails to evoke any kind of feeling or emotion which is the biggest flaw. The crying continues like plague in the film and karan makes every single character cry in the film except the audience. The emotional scenes are not at all effective, even the climax is so melodramatic and stereotype with pathetic dialouges.Ironically it is the humourous scenes which are better handeled. The other major flaw of the film is the loud backgroud score and the pace which is quite unbearable throughout the movie. What was the relevance of song like VANDE MATARAM in a family drama? It was ridiculous to see the indian woman dancing on the sreets of london alongside hrithik in this song.Oof!gimme a break. Why was so much emphasis put on poojas, mantras and mera bharat mahaan stuff?Believe me had it not been for these gimmickry used in the film to attract audiences ild have put this film in high ranking. The film sure has a grand look and the sets are rich and lavish but itld have been better had karan concentrated more on the story and script which was completely missing.
ACTING:Ild give credit to karan for assembling a big-starcast but it is not always that a big starcast can save a ordinary film.
AMITABH BACHCHAN, i thought was good but certainly not grt coz he had a very ill-defined role and his character was very much similar to the one in mohabbetein. He looked good and danced well in the shava shava song proving once again that there is no one to stand upto the BIG B.
JAYA BACHCHAN, frankly I didnt like her one bit in the film. Her character of a bharitya nari was annoying and I thought her expressions in the emotional scenes were exaggerated. But it was good to see her and amitabh in a film together after a long time.
SHARUKH KHAN, some people really dont change whether they play a Raj, asoka or a Rahul.Shah irritates u with the same old gimmicks, raised eyebrows, hamming and what not.He was absolutely ridiculous in the emotional scenes. My hatred for the man continues.........
KAJOL, is superb in the film and IMO the highlight of the film. Her comic timing is mind-blowing and she had people in splits. She looked pretty, wore lovely costumes and acted really well. She should not only be awarded for her perfomance in the film but also for saving the film from being a disaster.
HRITHIK ROSHAN was good too.He looked smashing, danced like a dream and acted well in presence of the big stars proving that he deserves every bit of successs he has got.
KAREENA KAPOOR, well ild say the most over rated actress of the hindi cinema. This woman has no beauty, charm or talent but what she does have is a KAPOOR surname which is reason enough to fetch her big films. As pooja in the film she is at her OVER-ACTING best. Her constant WHATEVERgot on my nerves.
The rest of the cast including RANI MUKHERJEE whose role I thought wasnt needed at all were passable.
MUSIC:Music of the film is yet another dissapointment. There is no freshness in the music the same old recycled tunes. The songs lack soul and the zing and sound like typical jatin lalit songs.SONIYA, SHAVA SHAVA and BOLE CHUDIYAN are some of the better and catchy numbers but then it is there picturisation that makes you like the songs better. The rest of the songs are not worth even a mention.K2H2 had some really good tracks which contributed immensly to the success of the film but sadly thats not the case with k3g.
On the positive side, KIRAN DEOHANS cinematography is amazing, SHARMISHTA ROY sets are rich, lavish and bright, i assume even chandni chawk has been reconstructed(talk about money being wasted)for the film.Farah khans chereography is fabulous and the humourous scenes have also been well done. But thats it.
K3G is pure escapist cinema, a film made to earn money and few rave reviews (from the paid critics of course). It ld have been better had karan used Its all about fooling the audienceas the captain of the film instead of Its all about loving your parents.I just cant understand why young directors like Karan johar and Aditya chopra are stuck with the same old formula of bollywood.I have nothing against their films or fairy tale cinema but to make such films to earn money and fame is bad.If you really want to show a Indian family with good values(as in k3g) why not show it with some authencity and realism? And what bugs me the most about these big films is the critics(taran adarsh)praising them to skies as if it is the first time they are seeing a film like K3G.
Watch K3G if u like karan johars style of film making coz it is guarenteed you are going to love it and if I had to give you one reason to watch this film itld be kajol otherwise you can surely give it a miss.
