A commercial success

Clearly amongst the hindi cinema there are two type of cinema, the serious ’art’ movies, and the bollywood ’masala’ or commercial movies.

Then again, take any newcomer, a star’s son or a star family member, and tell me how many of them have acted in a serious movie for their debuts. NONE.

Any newcomer’s debut, the bigger the banner, the higher the publicity, the larger the role ( hence double roles etc), the better teh songs...thats what it is aimed at.

No one ever called Rishi Kapoor, and Dimple Kapadia as bad actors looking like the opposite sex. No one accused the lovely songs of bobby being forced in the plot. No one accused the great Raj Kapoor of being partial to his own son ( according to me ....each father has a right I guess). No one accused Rishi Kapoor of looking like a girl, and he did look kinda cute those days.

Then why take it all out on a Hrithik Roshan, who has done no harm , in producing a totally glossy, entertaining, maybe mindless ( that is what commercial cinema is all about - or tell me can a single handed guy fight the whole battalion of people thru times immemorial( frm amitabh bacchan to sharukh khan???).

This is a flick with run of the mill plot, good songs, good acting whereever there was scope. Take for eg. The scene on the stranded island, where when he loses his cool with Amisha, that was delivered as naturally as a boy next door, or take the scene when they get up in the boat to find themselves in the middle of the ocean, with amisha crooning ’’oh how beautiful’’ and hrithik roshan obviously flustered.

Yes, it was not an aamir khan acting his best, but hrithik was catering to an audience of his own.

he was not applying for the position of amitabh bachan with his serious acting and funny comedy, nor was he applying for a loner-i-am-alone in this life dilip kumar role.

He was catering to the glossy youth today. And for that he did a pretty good job. He has kind of proved his mettle in Fiza, where when he committed a murder, he was as lost and scared as a normal human being would be.

He is a choreographer’s delight, see him execute those steps with total fluid movement, and execute them better than the extras around him ( which is a rarity).

He delivers his dialogues in as filmi way as the scene requires.

Amisha was ok, she is pretty, and looks so even when crying. Hence she served her role well in the movie.

Now if we had to talk realities in a commercial movie, the whole point of it being a commercial movie would be lost, then one might as well watch an astitiva or a vaastav.

Sharukh khan, mohabatein, talks to a dead woman through out the movie - how real is that????

If you are out to kill time, and listen to fun music, watch good scenery, good clothes, good dances, and an overall fun movie, a movie where you wouldn’t miss much when u look for popcorn in your lap, and the coke under your seat....go for it.

Its a very watchable movie.

Its a good debut performance.

It has a good score.

It has all the makings of a commercial success.

And it was.

Take a look. And then we can talk.

If you are looking for reality in a commercial movie, dont think about watching this or for that matter, dont think about watching any commercial cinema.
