Shot in Gujurat in 2000- Kai Po Che- meaning Kite Got Cut- perhaps a reference to the Gujurati kite festival, follows the lives of 3 friends- Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput), Govind (Raj Kumar Yadav) and Omi (Amit Sadh). Playing Vidya, Ishaans sister and Govinds love interest is Amrita Puri. Govind is a focused young man waiting to make it big, talking his friends who prefer to chill out to take part in his business endeavors. Omi and Ishaan are happy leading directionless lives while their parents worry. Supporting Omi is his powerful uncle who also happens to be a successful politician. Meanwhile, Ishaan makes it his responsibility to coach a talented young cricketer, Ali.
Wrapped in the story-lines are the Gujurat train blasts and revolts. The first half of the film unwraps at a slow pace but is a necessity for the audience to understand the relationships between the characters in the movie. Its all worth it when it comes to the second half. There the pace picks up and the film becomes heart breakingly sad, touching while at the same time humorous.
Introducing Ali in the storyline in the storyline was a genius move and he is excellent in the movie. Amit Trivedis music is simply superb. Soulful, great tunes, meaningful lyrics- the songs add more meaning to the movie.
Sushant Singh Rajput, Raj Kumar Yadav and Amit Sadh have done wonderful jobs as Ishaan, Omi and Govind respectively. Amrita Puri looks gorgeous as a simple Gujurati girl and has done a splendid job. All in all, Kai Po Che is an excellent film and definitely worth a watch.
