Mili ( Dir: Hrishikesh Mukherjee) was one film which showed suppressed anger of a loser, who lacked confidence even on his existence. Milis Big-B was angry. Angry at everyone and also on himself. He found solace only in loneliness among the stars, some songs, and in his drinks.
He never gave others a chance to know himself, neither did he took the chance of knowing others. It is as if, he was scared of even the kids in the building. He loved his dead mother, but that he expressed only to himself.
He was scared to laugh. He existed as a non-existent human, but preferred being like that. And then came, Milis ( Jaya Bhaduri) laughter, in his life.
Simplicity, yet with lot of caustic remarks- straightforwardness. That scene stands out, when Mili scolds Sekhar, for the first time, after Sekhar tries to commit suicide. Life changes to such an extent that Sekhar who once did not have confidence in himself not only becomes romantic and loving but turns out to be the bold man of 70s to have confidence to marry a lady who happened to be terminally ill. Optimism came in, and Sekhar takes Mili, to Geneva, with the hope that they would live happily ever-after.
Now coming to Kal Ho Na Ho ( Dir: Nikhil Advani), Kal Ho Na Hos Naina is very much similar to Sekhar. Cynical, preferring to be an introvert, no laughter in life, and does not really like to change- for better and even not for the worse. She misses her father, like Sekhar missed his mother, but then she is also a “loser” as they say.
But then enters SRK as Aman Mathur, like Mili. Terminally ill, and a person, who has caustic tongue, but lot of laughter in his kitty. And everyone knows what happens next, because this is a recent film.
But then was Aman really as successful as Mili was? Or was Naina- the 21st century woman of substance never was as strong like the 70s man?
Mili made a low in confidence Sekhar so bold that he could hold the hand of his terminally ill loves hand, but Naina, settled for marrying someone else, even before Aman died.
True it was Amans last wish, but then, is love a compromise? Or could Naina do, a Sekhar, and probably hope that Aman would get better?
The answers would be debatable. But it is strange these two films touch a common chord- cynicism wiped out with laughter and that too by people who have every reason not to care about the world- SRK as Aman and Jaya Bhaduri as Mili.
No, doubt Unvanquished “kid” thinks, that the 21st century woman chose “muscles”, but not the old-fashioned Man of 70’s, who had nothing to show his woman, but stars from his telescope……
Why I have these weird thoughts, when I liked both the films, and though think Big-B’s best was Mili, but then I liked KHNH too…..but then I wanted to write about Jerry……and all…..
Come on, I am a kid….how will I know that you all compared Anand and KHNH….and then I was infact continuing along the same lines, which I started writing yesterday…..
A cool-dude, with an amazing look, great muscle…and one abstract…..Humor…perhaps….but then…..believe me AB of Mili was very boring…….he smiled….and called himself Dusth Rakshash ( Evil Giant….!!)….
I know “ideals” will say….Sekhar was great….but then what is reality…..Is Sekhar not a dictionary, which no one really reads, but JUST refers to…………
Anyway, no talking of Evil things, me poor kid….
