The film teaches what life is about and how precious it is. Its the story of Aman Mathur(ShahRukh Khan), Rohit(Saif Ali Khan) and Naina(Preity Zinta).
It starts off as Naina(Naina’s Dad would have comitted suicide.
) narrating the story of her life where in there are constant arguments at her house between her mother and her mother-in-law(Naina’s grandmother). Naina has little time for herself as she has a job and has to take care of her kid brother and sister. She keeps brooding most of the time and does not enjoy life. Rohit is her close friend whom she finds amusing and funny. This is when Aman enters her life and transforms her and makes her to enjoy life.The three of them dance at a discotheque and chill out. Aman begins to love Naina but does not tell her so. Eventually Naina also falls in love with Aman. One day she goes to Aman’s home carrying flowers and sees his photo with a young woman, whom Aman says is his ex-wife and has come to New York to find her.This shatters Naina and she walks of tearfully. Then we come to know that Aman would have lied to Naina as he is suffering from a heart ailment and he would die very soon(And surprisingly for the viewers, Aman is shown earlier as dancing at a discotheque magnetically inspite of his heart ailment). Aman finds out that Rohit is in love with Naina and decides to bring them closer to each other.Will Naina begin to love Rohit? Will she ever find out about Aman’s illness?What happens if she finds out?
I will not answer these questions as this would reveal the suspense.
ShahRukh does full justice to his role and puts life and intensity to it. Its a treat to watch him perform. Saif is perfectly cast as a naughty and fun-loving guy. Preity is wonderful in the role of a serious young woman who later begins to enjoy life.
One can easily spot glimpses of other films in this movie(One of them is the scenes where Aman and Rohit are mistaken as being homosexuals by the maid, is taken straight out of the movie ’’Bend it Like Beckham’’(one of my favourite movies) where the heroines Jas and Jules are mistaken to be lesbians by Jules’s mom).
Lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar have depth and meaning, especially in the title song ’’Kal Ho Na Ho’’.Vasundara’s rendition of the song ’’Its the time to disco’’ is mesmerizing and keeps you glued to the seats.Her voice for this song reminds you of Nazia (of the ’’Aap jaisa koi’’ fame-song from the film ’’Qurbani’’)
