Gay Ho Naa Ho

Gay Ho Na Ho…..

This is what I would have named Karan Johar’s latest offering “Kal Ho Na Ho”. There are subtle references to gays through out the movie and we are subjected to scenes like:

· SRK and SAKP (Shahrukh and Saif silly) waking up in bed together, nuzzling each other in a loving way

· A flash of two gays making out on a street during a song sequence

· More scenes of SRK with SAKP than SRK and Preity Zinta or SAKP with PZ.

· SRK scenes more lovey dovey with SAKP than with PZ.

· Even more embarrassing situations between S and S with the unfortunate wide eyed “Kanta Ben” as unwilling spectator. I guess majority of the audience’s expressions mirrored hers during these eminently editable and unnecessary scenes.

Having read so much about the “shocking twist” in the second half, I was half expecting SRK to step out of the closet and declare his love for SAKP rather than the winsome Preity. But alas, this is a Hindi movie and this is India. So nothing of this sort happens and the movie has the usual expected ‘run of the mill’ ending. Moreover, Karan Johar’s films are usually “all about loving your parents”, so I guess Papa Johar wouldn’t have really approved of this “twist” in the storyline (and hence wouldn’t have parted with all that moolah needed to shoot a movie in New York).

So I guess this is Johar Jr’s first baby step out of the closet. I am all for a brave new world but spare us the innuendoes and sly references and come out in the open. I prefer the portrayal of the gay couple in “ Rules”, which made us sympathize with them and even cheer for them. I think I’m going off on a tangent since this was originally supposed to be a review of ‘KHNH’. IMHO the movie is definitely worth a watch. SAKP looks great and his wardrobe excellent. The dialogues have a “Dil Chhata Hai” hangover but the songs are easy on the ears, foot-tapping and woven nicely into the storyline. The movie is inspired by Anand but don’t expect too much as ‘KHNH’ is not a patch on the original.

Oh yes, and the ending is a direct lift from ’’Edward Sissorhands’’.
