'Kal- Yesterday and Tomorrow'- to fade with tomor

Starring: Shiney Ahuja as Tarun, Chitrangada as Bhavna, Smriti Mishra as Maya

Ruchi Narain’s debutante direction ’Kal- Yesterday and Tomorrow’ which hit the theatres last Friday (September 16) is a movie based on five friends (Tarun, Maya, Bhavna, Sangeeta and Teji) story of elite class, making regular news on Page 3.

Ruchi Narain has tried to encrypt a suspense murder story in the backdrop of ’Page 3’ culture. Bhavna played by Chitrangada who was last seen in ‘Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi….’ plays Tarun’s girlfriend and is ditched by him for rich industrialist’s daughter Maya who is also Bhavna’s best friend.

Tarun gets married to Maya but in the long run distance creep in their married life, as Tarun gets too involved with the business dreaming of becoming a billionaire at very young age, which was actually the point of getting married to Maya.

After having a break-off with Tarun, Bhavna does get attracted to a journalist whom she is introduced by fourth friend of their group, San aka Sangeeta, but still Bhavna can’t seem to move ahead with her life.

A year after Tarun’s and Maya’s marriage, Maya is found murdered in her bedroom and this is where the suspense rolls when most of the protagonists find themselves accused of the crime.

Maya has always had problems with her elder brother played by Gopi Kishen. Apart from running big business, Gopi Kishen is also involved in illegal activities and Tarun and Maya get to know about it. Tarun collects proofs against him and plans with Maya to expose him. Gopi Kishen being powerful manages to dominate Tarun.

Teji another friend in the group who works with Tarun also gets murdered.

Both Maya and Bhavna’s families find themselves trapped in disordered relationships, corruption and money laundering. Bhavna is helped by her journalist friend to unfold the remaining story.

Narain has tried to peel of too many layers simultaneously that makes one loose the interest in the story. Apart from Chitrangada rest of the four friends do not seem to have done a favor to their characters as far as acting is concerned. Actors like Boman Irani (playing Bhavna’s father), Gopi Kishen have added life to their characters but still their magic did not spell as expected.

To conclude, ‘Kal- Yesterday and Tomorrow’ is a very illogical, sad movie. So please folks if you are planning to watch the movie, do not forget to carry disprins in your bag.
