A Must See

Well, those who know about Gujarati - its prose and poetry will surely know about Kalapi. One of the very famous, very original (in style) and very different, he gave poetry a new direction.

He was a prince by birth but was a poet at heart. How he balanced both these jobs, managed 2 wives and 1 love, etc is very well enacted. The script is strong and well written, the dialogues are good, the actors are fantastic and they all together make it fantastic.

The beginning of the play, the first 15 mins or so was a little heavy and boring, maybe b’coz I was not paying attention or maybe it was too much of blabbering, but once the actors came it was all worth it.

I recommend you read a little about kalapi before you go and see the play.Another option would be to see the play and then read about him, his life and his poetry. But either ways you should read about him.

The reason I am stressing on this is coz I feel its a pity that we dont care about our great literature, our poets and authors. We do not have electronic copies of them and worst of all we do not even know where to get the information. Let us all start with atleast knowing our writers, our literature in its very basic form.

Let us at the bare minimum learn to read and write our mother tongue.

It is shameful that we may know 2 foreign languages but not know how to read/write in our own language.

A very handful of directors are yet making a true effort in making good theatre plays having a good subject, great story and dialogues. They are the people who have yet refrained from making the cheap comedies that have now entered the gujarati stage too. Let us atleast support their effort, thats the very minimum we can do.
