Review
1) Anarkali - Karthik, Chitra Sivaraman, Kadhir, Murdaza - 8/10
This beautiful song begins on a high note with the north indian style garerasa garerasa which creates an excellent mood for what is to follow. The tune Anarkali, will strike us in the first listen itself. The voices of the male and female lead is an asset for the song. However, the intermediate lines of the song has a bad tune, and seems to drag a bit. Other than that this is a perfect Rahman compostiion, with ample usage of traditional instruments such as the tabla and the like.
2) Azhagiya Cindrella - Hariharan - 6/10
This seems to be the weakest link in the album. Surely some people might feel that it deserves a higher rating. However, to my ears, the song although above average, fails to be likeable. This soft song can be a great ARR-hariharan melody, but ultimately bores me every time I listen to it.
3) En Uyir Thozhiye - Unni Menon, Chinmayi - 9.5/10
One of the most different songs, I have ever heard in Indian music. Overall the song has a defenite Malayalam folk song tune to it. It sounds like those thiruvathira songs during the Onam season. The composition is beautiful and ARR uses the piano and the strings well. This song defenitely takes a couple of listens to like. The voice of the singers are also good, making the song almost perfect.
4) Thee Kuriviye - Johnson, Harini, Mukesh - 10/10
Best song in the album and one of the top ten songs in my list. Words cannot express the beauty of this song. Beautiful compostion, beautiful tune, heavenly voice of Harini, takes us into a magic world. A few listens are needed to appreciate this song. Once again the tune is malayalam folkish.
5) Aha Thamizhamma - Rehana, Madhangi, Blaaze - 9/10
The only modern song in the album and perhaps one of the most innovative songs in the recent times. At initial hearing, one wonders whats all the ruckus with the lines Booyakka Booyakka Sha and some guy chanting A aa e ee in the background.
As usual, later we realize that those are eminent parts of another masterpiece. This song will appeal to the youth mostly. Perfect to listen while driving.
VERDICT
Overall this album is yet another refreshing album from AR Rahman, and it is 100 % worth buying. Sadly the song are not much talked about or appreciated, because of the movie being a really horrible loser.
