Experience with the Karbonn K330

I read the review by "htnakirs" and was very much influenced by the features made available in this phone. I reside in a very backward place in Assam, so I could not opt for online shopping. I had to tell a local retailer about its features and had to convice the retailer that 6 of us(myself and 5 of my friends) are going to purchase the same handset. Then he agreed to bring 6 phones for us. Anyways, I have been using this phone for a month and so far found it satisfactory. I needed a basic dual SIM phone, but I got MP3 support and FM Radio player, which provide good timepass-material whenever I feel bored. The exterior of this phone is fantastic. The burgundy or black coloured Karbonn K330 is just what you call "dashing".

Now the good things about the phone:

1) Battery: The 1200 mAh battery is just big enough to last 5 days of extensive use, including talking, texting and playing music. However using the FM Radio player decreases it slightly.

2) Dual SIM support: I need not tell anything about this feature. This is the main feature of this handset. Both the SIM are active simaltenously.

3) Music: 4 GB expandable memory makes it a large store of your favourite tracks. Audio quality is good on the earphone.

4) FM Playing and Recording: I am mentioning this as a feature, but I never recorded on the FM radio. I never need it.

5) Keypad: The keypad is a good-to-use one, with the brilliant looking blue backlight.

6) GPRS enabled: The handset is GPRS enabled and surprisingly, can open many pages which handsets of this price range from many well known brands cannot open. You will get pre-installed GPRS settings for almost any Indian service operator.

7) E-book reader: There is an e-book reader provided which can be used to read text files downloaded from computers.

Things I didn’t like about the phone:

1) The user-interface: The inbox is very deeply placed. You have to go through several menu levels to open the inbox. No shortcut for that! The standby screen is messed up with icons and time-date indicators. It could have been neatly arranaged. The TF icon(which is displayed if the memeory card is present) is not required to be displayed. Also, a number cannot be added to an existing contact in the phone memory directly from the standby screen. You will need to go to the Edit option of that contact to add a detail to it, which is really embarassing sometimes.

When you dial a number in your phonebook and hang up after talking, the phone returns to the phonebook, which may lead to accidental calls. The automatic key-lock time is also irritating - either 5 secs or 30 sec, nothing in between and no option for customising this time.

2) Heating up when talking: The phone heats up when I talk for more than 8 minutes or so at a time. I have also seen handsets from Samsung and Spice heating up like that, but this is one area where Nokia is better. Nokia takes much more time to heat up; 20 minutes or so.

3) Delayed response: I found that the phone responds a bit slowly, which is sometimes irritating. You will have to use it like a guy who is using a mobile phone for the first time. If you use it like an experienced pro, then it will run at half the speed at which you will operate it.

4) Sound quality: Its okay, but not that good. I can find a crackling sound when the sound is pumped up to 100%. It cant handle heavy music on the speakers. But the earphone’s sound is quite fine.

5) This phone cannot handle calls on both the connections simultaneously. If you are talking with one connection, the other will said to be "not reachable".

6) Wallpaper: The phone doesn’t support wallpapers that are larger than 10 KB in size. I have failed to find a wallpaper on the internet less than 10 KB.

7) Ringtone volume: The volume is ok for MP3 tones, but polyphonic tones are played very low in volume by this phone.

8) Display size: I found the display size(128 x 128) too small. It should have been atleast 128 x 160.

9) The theme cannot be changed. You will have to look at the dirty orange menu background all the time.

10) No PC connectivity and Java support: The charging socket is designed like a data cable socket. It supports USB charging support. The same socket could have been used like a cable socket for data transfer, which would have required a little extra hardware and a software manipulation to make the phone work as a card reader. Detaching the memory card is really embarassing task and it may lead to the damage of the card reader pins, if done very frequently and carelessly.

The phone doesn’t have a Java runtime environment and you will have completely forget about Java games and applications.

No doubt, I have listed more disliking points than the liking ones, but I feel that I got what I paid for. I am satisfied with this phone and using it happily.

The official price of this handset is Rs. 2499. But I purchased it for Rs. 2140 only.
