Kaziranga forest is on the NH37, 230Km/ 05 hrs bus journey from Guwahati on its west and Jorhat 90 Km on its east. Both places can be approached by air. Nearest railway station is Jakhalabandha with 01 weekly train(Apr 2015) journey time 5 hrs and 40 Km on west of Kaziranga/ Kohora bus stop. Daylong private taxis and buses are available Jakhalabanda with 01 hr journey time. However Furkating on east 60 Km away is served with daily train services. Private taxis may be expensive(Rs2500/-) to reach Kaziranga.
Best way is to use a regular city bus/ auto service to ASTC Bust stand 13 Km away outside the city. Buses towards Jorhat and other destinations with journey time Kaziranga max 05 hrs are available each hr. Else walk 150 mts using Guwahati railway station over-bridge on its opposite side to NETWORK Center for availing direct services(basic waiting and toilet facilities are also available). Beware you will be approached by touts and same service will offered with additional charges. Please remember you have to get down at KOHORA, for maximum availability of hotels and guest houses. Govt forest rest house Aranya, Banani are also in this area and need advance bookings. You don’t need AC till 01st week of April.
Kaziranga is divided in 03 zones. East, central and West. Apart from Rs 400/-(Govt fee Rs 300/- and Guard fee Rs100/-), forest entry fee say Rs 50/-(only once in a day) and jeep safari cost East Rs2000/-, central 1500/- and West 1800/- is applicable for max 06 visitors/ shareable at your end(rates Apr 2015). Average budget hotel cost for 02 beds Rs 1100/- w/o AC. You will find many such choices if you ready to walk around Kohora central bus stop. Since checkout time is 1200 hrs try plan to reach at 1200 hrs in Kohora and with 02-nights and 3 days trip enjoy a safari on the day-1 afternoon. 02nd day morning elephant safari and in afternoon before 1445hrs, go for safari in another zone. You still have time for 01 more safari on 03rd day morning. Enough buses are available from Kohora for Guwahati. Can try your luck for shared cars on their return journey with cost not more than Rs 500/- each seat. Plan visit other than sat & Sunday.Rush time is full Dec to Jan end.
