Kumarakom and the Backwaters

Kerala indeed IS ’’God’s Own Country’’ We were pleasantly surprised that all the tourist literature and photos were 100% true .. actually none of tehm do justice to it’s beauty.

Kochi airport is the most beautiful airport in India, and the landing, in a clearing amongst cocout trees is amongst the best we’ve seen in the world.

The Backwaters Houseboat cruise was among the best treats - you get a houseboat all for yourself, with 3 attendants who attend to every need of yours, still are inconspicuous t give you your privacy, as teh boat winds it’s way through meandering brooks, along houses of the Kerala backwaters. It ties up to a coconut tree on a desolate island in Vembanad lake for the evening. The early morning sight f fisermen casting tehir nets close to you as birds of all kinds chirp in the island.. is the best way to wake up!

Oh - did I tell you... the food is amazing... and the boat has better facilities than most hotels! Costs 6000 rs. per night (actually noon to 10 am), all inclusive and every bit worth it.

We took a cruise on Rainbow houseboats but teh other appear equally good.

Here are pictures of Kumarakom, the Backwaters and Waterscapes -

KTDC Waterscapes is the best kept secret of Kumarakom.... with canals cutting the resort, luxurious rooms raised on stilts (Much like Thailand), in the midst of lush greenery and hugging (it’s on the other side of the fence) the Vembanad /Kumarakom bird sanctuary.

Amazingly beautiful birds perch on your balcony all day, and you get fantastic views of the lake. Taj is next door but does not have the proximity to greenery.

Costs at about 4000 rs. per night, are a steal... some packages are even ore competitively priced.
