A simple, apt and sweet movie.

Khoobsurat is a wonderful movie - a simple, apt and sweet statement much like the movie. It is really like a window into the bygone innocent era, where the biggest issue in your house was that u r late for breakfast!!! truly nirmal anand !

A simple story involving the ever prominent Indian joint family in which love , tradition and values are firmly instated in each home member. Dina pathak plays the role of a strict, wife/mother/ mother in law who rules her home with an iron yet lovable fist, keeping every ones happiness and well being in mind.

No talking loudly, no laughing loudly, meals and tea a proper times, study and exercise to done scrupulously, no romances and indulgences of any kind !! Ashok kumar is her hen pecked, obedient husband. To this happy home weds Rekha aka Manju’s elder sister who belongs to a bubbly, happy and loud family…little sister misses her didi very badly and lands up at this sasural like a whirlwind, falls in love with didi’s devar(rakesh roshan)and promptly goes about winning over everyone in this house with her infectious zest for life. Aunty ji of course is not too enamored by this and makes her feelings very clear.

How manju overcomes this with love, dedication and devotion and turns out to be the ideal bahu for this home is the tale of this hrishikesh mukerjee’s comedy classic.

U will smile throughout the movie, rekha is brilliant and oh so adorable with her long 2 pig tails and permanent smile. Rakesh roshan as the devar is also very good, the surprise package I feel is shashikala who is for the first time in a positive role as the loving elder bhabhi who loves to dance but is too scared to for fear of upsetting mataji.

What I loved was the purity of relations- there is no jija- saali / devar bhabhi suggestive nonsense, no one is conspiring against anyone – all sons love each other – their wives adore each other. Friends and servnts are like family. There is not a mean bone in anyone. A true fairy tale or what lifecould be when times were simpler.

Get this DVD and keep it. It will some day be like therapy!!
