Kill Dil.a story of two orphans who grow up under the infuence of bullets and gun-users!Story of a bad man falling in love with a richie richs daughter.a story
which sounds familiar(and indeed is).
Without wasting any time(already wasted 145 mins)lets start the review.
Story:
As mentioned in the prologue, Its a story of Dev(Ranveer) and Tutu(funny name! Ali Zafar). The movie starts at a promising note when we see Dev and Tutu recording a
video and trying to give us a glimpse of their lives. As it turns out, Bhaiyyaji(Govinda ala re!) found these infants in a dust bin and brought them up as his own
kids. They become killers by the time they turn 18 and their whole n sole motive in life is to increase the "people they killed" count based upon Bhaiyyajis
instructions.
Things were all hunky dory(they kill ->they are rewarded->killing continues) until one of the two killers(Dev) bump into a "Sweet girl" Disha(Parineeti) and then
after few "decent/indecent" jokes and sms(LOL/ROFL) exchanges falls in love with the girl.Dev ultimately tries to defy Bhaiyyaji and follows his heart.Leaves his gun
and starts selling life insurance policies for our own Alok(Bauji)Nath.Bhaiyyaji finds that out, slaps him, he cheats bhaiyaji and ultimately comes back after being
ditched by sweet "Sweeta".oops Disha!Within ten mins after this ditching session, bhaiyyaji is murdered(just like that?say a dhansu dialogue and take bullet!) and the
other murdered(Tutu!) follows Devs foot steps. He decides to sell life insurance policies too!
End of story and end of torture too.
Familiar story treated with in the worst possible way.Its a perfect example of a movie looking promising from the promos and turning out to be a disaster in reality.
Direction/Choreography/Cinematography:
Lets start with the Captain.Mr.Shaad Ali.(Director)-If Jhoom Barabard Jhoom was not enough of a torture, this movie filled in the empty sections of the torture
episode.
What happened to the director who gave us Sathiya and Bunty Babli? This movie has been treated with the least interest possible from a director.Such good actors gone to
waste at the hands of a good director turned lost/confused.When I started watching the movie, for the first 15 minutes I felt satistfied and glued to the plot.Past 15
mins and after the entry of Parineeti, everything turned topsy turvy. It seems Shaad Ali got lost in the beautiful Sweeta and forgot about direction altogether.
Where was the suspense?Where is the gangsters fight?Where is the Police/Killer chase? No police wallah in the movie.Just Gundas and Netas!Seriously?
Few of the dialogues were impressive(Bacha paida kahin bhi ho specially).Mind you, Just few!
The plot dint have anything much in it and after the tepid direction from the director, the only thing I could feel is sorry for the fabulous actors playing their part.
Choregraphy:
Govindas steps in bol deliya were fantastic and so was the "touch and move" step in the title track.Apart from these two signature steps, remaining were all mediocre
and repetitive.I personally disliked that "puppy" step in happy budday to u.irritating!
Cinematography:
The 70s look in the movie was impressive and the surroundings were captured effectively.I was expecting a lot more from Delhis(specially Old delhi) intrinsic beauty
than what the camera captured.the local flavour(example:Highway) was missing in this movie. The Qutub Minar scene looked like a scene from Cartoon network or a moment
captured from Dev anands movies.Primary school kind of cinematography.
Cast Performance:
Govinda-Started with a promising attitude. He showed the class of an experienced actor.I felt happy that Govinda made a comeback in a movie that was challenging his job
experience and which portrayed him in a negative role.He tried to look ruthless and the intense look in his eyes did justice to his role. However, it couldnt give rise
to chills in the spine like Amreesh Puri/Sadashiv AMrapurkar/Ashutosh Rana or even Riteish Deshmukh would. The scare-inflicting factor was missing.terribly missing.
Ranveer:
Lacked energy.I can never believe Ranveer Singh can act so tastelessly. He is always brimming with energy but not in this movie. That goofy/stupid look on his face made
him look cute but not a murderer.I went for the movie for Ranveer and he let me down this time.Where is the intensity he displayed in Gunday gone?Getting rusty with
time?Take rest/recover and come back.I know you deserve much better than a Kill/Dil.
Ali Zafar:
After Total Siyappa I simply gave up on him.But he surprised me in this movie. The balanced act and speaking through the eyes acting worked really well for him.I
thought I will miss Arjun Kapoor in Kill Dil.However, Ali Zafar as Tutu dint let me miss him much.I aprrectiate the work he did and his effort showed.
Parineeti:
Another actor in the movie who appeared to be acting halfheartedly and who somehow lost track mid-way.She looked fat/not pretty/not glamorous.
The stylist made her look terrible. She was supposed to be a glamourous diva and she looked like a fat wannabe.Leave the looks department aside, even her acting was
out-of-form and it appeared to be a case of "stuck in the wrong job" advertisement!Umm.Not cool.
Music:
Shankar Ehsaan Loy did an above average job.The title track is really fantastic and Sonu/Shankars voice added the much needed spice to it.Bol Beliya, Sajde and Maiya
were good too. Some tracks could have been better but all in all a hummable album.
Final Verdict:
You will feel cheated by this movie.First impression(In this case the promos) is not always the last impression. To all the producers & directors-Dont underestimate the
I.Q. of Hindi movies audience. We cant take half-cooked stuff in the name of a "Yash raaj" movie and pronounce it as palatable.
1 star for Title Track, Govinda and Ali zafar=1 for Kill/Dil
