An overrated scooter

My kinetic Sym Flyte is 8 months old. I have hardly done 400 km on it and it has given us a lot of problems.

  1. The suspension is over-ratted. The motorcycle-fork like front shocks looks good on the scooter but does not add to the riding comfort of the scooter.  I owned and used a VESPA in my college days and the Sym’s suspension feels like a bicycle when compared to it.

  2. The brakes are shoddy and do not inspire confidence for an engine of that capacity. My wife is not confident riding this scooter for the same reason.

  3. Before the third service, I experienced problems with the engine. The scooter would only start with the choke on and the engine would sputter to a stop after running a few meters. I got the scooter serviced, the carburetor cleaned, but the problem did not go. The service center then changed a fuel pump (replaced from a new bike lying in the show room) after which that particular problem was solved. Apparently other bikes had the same problem and also underwent replacements.  The dealer however did not charge me for the service or for the part since the vehicle was still in the warranty period.

  4. Ground clearance is low, so the bike keeps scrapping on speed breakers. Prior to the 4th service, I found gear oil leaking from the engine. The leak seemed to be coming from the joint between the plastic casing and the aluminum portion of the engine. The service center replaced a cap covering the port to fill gear oil thinking that’s the problem. However the oil leak is still there. I suspect that the plastic casing of the engine might have got knocked because of the poor ground clearance and the leak may be secondary to a fault in the joint.

  5. My dealer changed the headlights to halogens on my purchase of the scooter.  The head lamps are good for night riding. The tail lamps and indicator lamps are of good quality, however the switches leave much to be desired. The horn-switch would get stuck after getting wet. The rest of switches too feel very plasticy and of poor quality. The battery box started showing rust at the bottom, 3 months after purchase of the scooter.

  6. The 4 stroke engine sure packs a punch, but mileage is only around 35 km/l.

  7. Front fueling is convenient; lamp in the boot space was very thoughtful. The mobile charger, I have never used.

8.  Although the body is made of plastic, it is quite a heavy scooter to maneuver, without the engine on.  Ladies must take note of this prior to purchasing this scooter.

My opinion is look for another scooter, this one lacks the quality of a 45K vehicle.
