The Evergreen Singer

I think it is my fortune to write about one of my favourite singers- Kishore Kumar. I have a special attatchment to him because I grew up hearing his one and only Malayalam song , that too from the voice of my Papa. When I was a baby, I hesitated to eat eggs, and my Father will sing- " ABCD...Chettan KD...Aniyanu Pedi....Adi, idi, pidi.. (I thing most of you did not understand anything)

And when he sings the last word, I will laugh loudly and at this time my father will make me eat those eggs(poor baby).

My Papa studied in North India and at that time there was only one singer who steal his mind- Kishoreji. My Papa used to record his songs from AIR and now we have almost all his songs. I think his speciality is his loud and strong voice which is very flexible to sing all kinds of songs. I came to know that he has n’t studied Classical or Hindusthani Music. If that is true or not, his abilities are truly , God’s Gift.

Kishore Kumar was born on 4 August , 1929 and he is one of the all rounders of Bollywood. He was not only a singer, he was an actor, director, producer, Music composer and so on..I think his voice suited Amitabh Bachan the most. I still laugh when I see the film Padosan in Sony...How nice it was! He was a leading actor in Bombay Talkies. His first film as an actor was Shikari and singer was Ziddi.

Kishore Kumar rised to fame mainly through the songs of S.D. Barman and R.D. Burman, I think. Their combination always gifted priceless songs to India. It was Mohd. Rafi who introduced yodeling in songs but it clicked when Kishore sung it. During his time, the competition in his field was not so easy with other wonderful singers. But his extraordinary talents and voice made him the favourite of thousands. Kishoreji was a great fan of K.L. Saigal. In his first songs, he tried to imitate him a little. Then it was S.D.Burman who asked him to bring his own style.

Kishore Kumar was a rebellious singer. He sang in unorthodox style and created a style of his own very much different from the singing style of playback singers of his era and even the post Kishore era. He rarely did alaps in aa aa but used he he ha ha. He practised taan very rarely, but took subtle variations as demonstrated in the songs Jab Bhi Koi Kangana Bole and Aankhon Mein Humne Aapke Sapne Sajaye Hain.

His personal life was not that easy. He married four times. His son Amit Kumar was also a playback singer. In October 1987, he died following a massive heart attack. But still he lives in our minds, showering inspirations on the upcoming singers. His voice still echoes in our hearts and souls......

My favourite songs( maybe a wrong judgement)

  1. Aane wala pal jaane waala hai

  2. O Saathi Re

  3. There bina Zindagi ki Koi Shikwar

  4. Aajrapat Jaye To

5.Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai..

and 100s more

Thank You
