One cannot forget the fantastic movies directed by Aziz Mirza (Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Yes Boss, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Chalte Chalte). His movies have always attracted people and the master director manages to make films which viewers don’t forget immediately after coming out of the theatre. Kismat Konnection is no exception! The movie is an excellent entertainer! The movie doesn’t have any new story, yet its simple execution works big time!
The story of the movie: Raj Malhotra (Shahid Kapoor), based in Toronto, is fed up with his life. He was the winner in sports, dramatics, and studies during his college days. He was also awarded as the Best Student of the College. Yet, he was finding it difficult to get a job as an architect anywhere. He was desperate to get that one big chance, but unfortunately that no one was interested in him! Desperate to remove this bad phase of his life, he meets Hasneena Bano Jaan (Juhi Chawla) who claims to help those who are going through a bad phase. She says Raj that in order to get everything in place, he would have to first find his lucky charm! Soon, the hunt for the lucky charm begins. At this point of time, Raj comes across Priya (Vidya Balan) and their first meeting was quite unpleasant. But soon, Raj realizes that his lucky charm is none other than Priya!
Kismat Konnection begins wonderfully with SRK’s voiceover. Even Shahid’s entry was wonderful and the sequences that follow make it more interesting. The best thing about 1st half is undoubtedly the lucky charm concept which was well shown. The scene where Raj finally comes to know that it’s Priya who is his lucky charm was just fantastic! Lots and lots of interesting, entertaining and funny moments make the first half of Kismat Konnection absolutely rocking!
Like most of the movies, in Kismat Konnection too, things start falling in the 2nd half in few places but the film picks up instantly when it falls. If you’ll closely observe, Kismat Konnection becomes a typical Bollywood love story in the 2nd half yet it succeeds in entertaining because the execution and narration was quite simple without going over the top in any of the scenes. In short, the simplicity of the movie was its charm!
The climax was predictable but still it works and satisfies. Ad for its flaws are concerned, there were two scenes which I didn’t liked. One, is the scene where Raj borrows money from a gangster. The scene was nice one but didn’t had any connection, even later in the movie. The other, the scene where Raj comes across Rita. I didn’t understood what exactly Mr Mirza was trying to convey by that scene, but it was funny.
Shahid Kapoor was as usual supercool! He looked wonderful; his hairstyle, his clothes-everything was just perfect. But most importantly, it was his marvelous performance which impresses the most! With Vivah and Jab We Met, he had already proved that he can get totally in the performance and act wonderfully! The best thing in his performance in Kismat Konnection is that he was acting naturally and confidentally! Note the scene in the beginning where a drunken Shahid is cursing God. Another noteworthy sequence: Shahid telling Vidya about his bad phase just before the climax. Both these scenes were difficult ones but Shahid enacted it amazingly and easily! Way to go, Shahid!
Much is said that Vidya Balan looks older than Shahid but watch the movie and you won’t notice this so called age gap between the two even in a single scene! In fact, both of them look great together! As far as her performance is concerned, she was as usual fabulous and performs as per her character demanded. Her outfits and her hairstyle are little unusual, but it looks great on her. Excellent work, Vidya!
Juhi Chawla was terrific this time! She had already given bravura performance in Krazzy4 and Bhoothnath earlier this year and she gives an equally great performance here too! She has always been there in all Aziz Mirza’s flicks! It won’t be wrong to say that Juhi is Aziz Mirza’s lucky charm!!
Vishal Malohtra does the same type of acting in all his movies but still manages to entertain! In fact, he was brilliant in some of the scenes! Om Puri was perfect! Himani Shivpuri was quite funny! Manoj Bohra does a nice job in a negative role. Amit Verma (Vidya’s fiancé) was okay. Boman Irani leaves a mark. Others were good.
Pritam’s music was as usual lovable! All the songs of the movie-Tu Hai Meri Soniye, Bakhuda, Is This Love, Soniye Ve, and Move Your Body Now were excellent! Some songs were added unnecessarily in the movie but it didn’t make the movie boring.
Sanjay Chowdhary’s background score was excellent and very unusual and unique! The music used for Juhi Chawla scenes-the Egyptian theme music-was superb! Binod Pradhan who did an extraordinary work in Rang De Basanti and Ta Ra Rum Pum was good no doubt but should have used aerial shots to make some scenes look livelier. But the lensman did a great job in some scenes, esp in the song ‘Bakhuda’.
The art directors did a great job, especially in erecting the Juhi Chawla’s house scenes. Sanjay Chhel and Ashish Karia’s dialogues were brilliant. The best dialogue of the movie: “Phooti kismat aur tez dimag…Khatarnak Combination hota hai!”
Vibha Singh and Sai Kabir’s screenplay was topnotch. Rahila Mirza’s story was quite interesting and Aziz Mirza did full justice to it. What also helped Mr Mirza is his experience in filmmaking. That’s why the old and experienced directors are able to come up with nice films while many debutant filmmakers often fail.
Some of the best scenes of the movie:
1. The first scene
2. Shahid’s entry
3. Raj and Hiten (Vishal) at Lalwani’s office (terrific scene!)
4. Raj’s visitsto Haseena Bano Jaan
5. Raj meeting Priya for the 1st time
6. The snooker sequence (fabulous!)
7. Raj and Hiten shouting slogans!
8. The intermission point
9. Raj and Priya in the ferry
All the songs
The last 25 minutes of the movie
On the whole, Kismat Konnection is a sweet-n-simple film which would surely be loved and appreciated and KONNECT with the audience! Worth watching many times!
