KAHANI KISNA KI

Movie is picturised in backdrop of Paudi-Garhwal (Uttaranchal) with sceneric beauty of snow covered valleys. Time line of movie is pre-independence era.

It is a story of childhood love? Cute kid Katherine is a daughter of a British army officer. She admires kid Kisna, who is son of their servant (Shivaji Samant) and takes care of their horses. Kid Luxmi loves kid Kisna fervently and is jealous of Kid Katherine. Katherine?s dad sends her abroad for studies and time takes a leap of 20 years.

Grown up Katherine (Antonia Bernath) comes back to India. India is all set to become independent. Freedom fighters have their heart full of hatred for Britishers? so are feelings of Kisna. Katherine doesn?t understand this politics, for her time hasn?t change. She?s still crazy for her childhood love. Kisna respects her feelings and reciprocates the same for her.

Story takes a turn.. Suddenly situation in village starts getting heated up. Rebels(including Kisna?s brother) wants to kill all Britishers which includes Katherine as well. She takes shelter of Kisna, her best friend?her only hope. Kisna is caught in a dilemma where his relatives/friends are against his love and he can?t afford to lose either of them. What will Kisna do now? How successful he?ll be doing his duty and at what price? Whom will he marry Luxmi or Katherine?

PERFORMANCE

Vivek Oberoi : In his new get up of a villager with moustache n beard, Vivek Oberoi looks very natural. Brilliantly he has performed the role of a romantic lover, of a musician and a warrior. This actor has grown up with his roles from Company to Yuva. Instead of getting stereotyped, he has accepted roles of various shades. After the regime of Khans , Vivek has all the ingredients of being numero uno.

Isha Sharvani : This Gaon ki Chori didn?t have much scope to act. She was taken to perform choreography, which she does magnificently. I have heard to pole dance before, but this ?Python Dance? on a rope was really incredible. I am sure she must have taken formal education from ?Nagraaj?/Super Commando Dhruv of Raj comics fame. Actually, it was an open challenge by Mr. Ghai, guys please feel free to incorporate these dance numbers in your movies.

Antonia Bernath : This debut actress was unexpectedly amazing. Be it her beauty.. or her acting, she does full justice to her role. Be it her innocence when she asks Kisna about drinking milk.. or seduction when she takes a bath in Haridwar..or the pain on her face when she gets news of Kisna?s engagement.. or fear on her face when she?s in temple/stable.. or anguish when she is ready to sacrifice herself.

MYOO-SIC

Combo of A.R. Rehman and Ishmail Darbar can be nothing less than deadly. Music and Songs of Kisna are its biggest strength. Soundtrack is fresh and original.

?Woh Kisna Hai? and ?Hum hain is pal yahan? are totally enthralling with its music and voice of Sukhvinder, Udit Narayan and Madhushree. No one else could have sung ?Woh

Kisna hai? on such high notes as brilliantly as Sukhvinder. He has created his niche for similar songs like chaiyaan-chaaiyaan, ban than chali, Damroo baje re..etc

?Ga tu aisee dhun mein ga? is a light melodious song of Ismail Darbar picturised beautifully on Vivek Mushran with kids in boat. ?Chilman uthegi Nahin? is a ’Kotha Quawwali’ song having bluish background with sets similar to Mugal-e-azam. Rest of the songs are also nice.

WARNING : Some climax scenes revealed ahead. Continue reading at your own risk..

POST-MORTEM

Subhash Ghai has been one of the most reputed names in Bollywood. Some how, he lost his magic after Pardes and continued a series of flops. But, he has recreated that magic back in KISNA. Subhash Ghai is known for discovering new actresses and his latest discoveries in Kisna are simply superb.

Movie has been inspired by true selfless of Lord Sri Krishna and Radhaji in form of Kisna and Katherine. Pious love of Sri Krishna and Radhaji is not only respected but worshipped in our culture. Love which doesn?t demand anything where there is no room for misunderstanding and fighting but only trust and sacrifice. No other movie has tried to capture it so beautifully.

Kisna is not shown as super human possessing extra ordinary powers of ?Sunny Deol? or larger than life attitude of ?Shahrukh Khan?. He is a normal villager, who doesn?t create a ruckus for not marrying Luxmi. He is not arrogant blood shedding Asoka, but pleads in front of his brother to let them go. He isn?t a coward but is practical, so flees away from Prince?s house and take shelter of Jumman Miyan. He is weak enough to be beaten in riots. Kisna understands well his Dharma towards his wife and Karma that his Mother has taught.

Jealousy of Luxmi is natural, but she can?t accept any one else pointing a finger on Kisna. Katherine knows that Kisna has to return to Luxmi, yet she can?t stop herself from loving him. At last Luxmi accepting fact that Kisna loved only Katherine but he never overlooked from his marital duty. There wasn?t any villain in this movie (Prince is shown almost helpless), it was just the balance in relationship that was a real challenge for Kisna.

Beginning and end of movie is taken from Titanic, which has left a lasting experience. Also, soundtrack of titanic is used in some parts. I wish Director would have refrained from copying this...but perhaps there couldn’t be anything better to depict this situation. Scenes of riots were also dragged a bit, which could have been trimmed.

Subhash Ghai has brilliantly portrayed a beautiful picture of love in this movie. This movie is like a cool breeze; a classic piece of art which needs patience to appreciate and understand. Many people didn?t like this movie, because it is slow paced. Believe me, it wasn?t made to go anywhere.. it just stays there but there are so many colours in it that time passes by!
