At Low Altitude

Controversies & hype has become a part of publicity stunt, which some thinks will assist a film to become a huge money spinner or at least can help the film to recover the price. At times it does wonders to the film but of late we have seen that more then 90 percent of the films have failed to live up to the expectations that were created by the controversies. Kites is one unique example.

Rakesh Roshan has been very fortunate as a film maker as maximum of the films that he directed were major hits but unfortunately his tenure as a producer has not taken off well of late. Though he began as a producer in his early days into production.

Director Anurag Basu had everything at his disposal that is required to make a superior product. A reputable banner, a big star & a free hand to operate. But was that enough?

Want a green card? Get married to a man or woman of that nation, become his/her spouse & your job is done. That’s what Hrithik does, gets married to women who wants a green card. That’s his profession. He falls for Kangana Ranawat for the sake of her money because she is the daughter of Kabir Bedi, a very rich & influential man.

Barbara Mori took assistance of Hrithik Roshan to get the green card & is now getting married to Nick Brown, of course for the sake of his money. A gold digger, you see. Nick Brown is the son of Kabir Bedi.

This brings Hrithik & Barbara close, intentions disclosed, falls for each other & elope. Needless to say they are chased by Nick & party who wants to settle his account with them. What follows is as predictable as Jack & Jill rhyme.

The writer Rakesh Roshan has chosen a story that has nothing new to offer & top of it his screenplay writers made the matter worst by writing a very amateurish screenplay. A man with a twisted backbone cannot stand straight & story is the backbone of any film.

With a weak script director Anurag Basu tried to narrate the story in flash back but his treatment only added troubles to the case of Kites. Why did he prefer to shoot the film in close ups of the star cast is beyond my understanding. He was not in his form, can’t blame him though entirely but being the captain of the ship, he has to shoulder some blame, if not all.

Rajesh Roshan’s music is not of his standards as except one song ’Zindagi’ none other song stays with the viewer after he has left the theater.

Kabir Bedi is actually wasted, introduced as a very influential man, he is never shown taking any decisions. Nick Brown joins the list of actors who believe screaming, shouting, hamming is acting. He has to learn a lot.

Kangana Ranawat is wasted & she wears a smile like Sachin Tendulkar in endorsements, where only the lips break into smile & eyes remains completely out of sync with it.

Lots of money has been spent in action scenes as cars crash with each other, blown away, etc but still the scenes don’t excite the viewers because we have seen better then this in the past.

Barbara Mori is good on screen & makes a confident debut but whether she will stay in Bollywood is a question with the answer known to all.

The only saving grace to Kites is none other then the hero Hrithik Roshan. What a performer. With his superlative performance he did manage to give a reason to the viewer to glued to the screen in this otherwise Zzzzzz grade film. His fans won’t be disappointed.

Overall a very disappointing film that fails in almost every department baring a few.
