Well well, I just happened to run into my alma mater when I was reading some other reviews on this great site. I thought of penning down the first review on this fine institution. While the 4 years that I spent exposed me to variety of experiences, let me see if I can summarize the salient aspects clearly. Campus: One of the better things about this place. It is almost IIT ish in its expanse and variety. Quite an awesome experience to the freshie. The large campus also means that there are more places for you to get ragged by seniors. Ragging used to be quite severe during my days (1997). Other than that it is a fun place to hangout and the crowd is colourful and so are the birds. :) Courses: I am not aware of the latest situation but during my time there were Electronics, Production, Mechanical branches which offered good courses. The lab facilities (esp the computer lab) was adequate given the strength and demand for computing intensive courses. In the final year, several electives are available to specialize in the area of your choice. Staff: I would rate the staff as mediocre on the whole. There arent too many PhDs in the first place (esp in the Electronics Dept). Most of these call themselves Professors whereas in reality they are only lecturers if you go by the real defnition of a Professor. Some of the faculty is dedicated in terms of covering the portion or taking additional interest in solving our doubts. Some of the stalwarts during my time were Mr. Thosar, Mr Joshi, Dr. Ghosh, Mrs Deepa Nair etc who took real pains in getting the matter across. I will never forget Prof Bokhare and his exciting method of gearing everything around a few core concepts which still serve me strong to this day. The projects that these folks come up with during the final year are also innovative and help you learn new things.
However, these good people are overwhelmed by several de-motivated, clueless deadwood who suffer from complete amnesia with regards to their work ... case in point: the (pseudo)Doctor Choksi who was more concerned in getting his afternoon sleep than teaching his subject. While I can ramble on about other such specimens
I think it is important that students who enroll in these colleges get their basic right of a well qualified teacher, esp after paying the high fees. You students need to complain and get such people replaced by more deserving canditates. This is something I realized after taking graduate school here in the USA.
end of rant ... :)
Coming back to the other aspects, this place has a good placement program and several reputed companies routinely recruite tens of students during their final year. This place is a good option for those who couldnt make it into the VJTIs and the IITs. I would rate it among the upper rung of colleges in and around Mumbai.
