Kodaikanal is indeed a paradise on earth.
The entire city centres around the Berijam lake and directions and references of various tourist spots is from this point.
Just 3 kms from the lake is the Kurinji Temple, seat of Lord Muruga. Kurinji is the flower which abounds on the hill slopes and blooms once in 12 years. Andavar means God. Hence Lord Muruga is referred to as the Lord of the Hills. From this temple, one can get a spectacular view of the Palani & Vigai dam.
Of particular interest to most is the Solar Physical Observatory. Situated 3 kms away, it is at an elevation of about 2, 300 m. If prior appointments are taken, one can watch stars and planets from the observatory even beyond the visiting hours.
There is also a park called Bryant Park, which has a delightful flower show every May and boasts of scores of wonderful flowers and hybrids.
If one enjoys trekking as I do, you can go trekking to the Kukkal caves situated 40 kms away or easier trekking places such as to the Perumal Peak, which is 11 kms away. This trek starts at a place called Neutral Saddle and is a breath taking experience.
As far as accomodation is concerned, I would recommend the Hotel Tamil Nadu. It also offers Veg and Non Veg food. Moreover, if you wish to tantalise your taste buds, try eating at Dawat Restaurant. It also offers Veg, Non veg and Continental food.
But inspite of where you go, remember to go to Dolphin nose, 8kms from the lake. This is flat projected rock and provides fabulous views down below.
All I can assure you, is that if you intend to get close to nature, Kodaikanal is THE place to be in.
