Kohinoor is a Malayaam heist thriller directed by Vinay Govind and written by Salil Menon and Ranjeet Kamala Shankar. The story is happening in the late 1980’s and the movie stars Asif Ali, Indrajith Sukumaran, Aju Varghese, Chemban Vinod, Vinay Fort, Aparna Vinod, and Bhavana.
The movie tells the story of Louis who respects and admires underworld dons. He is highly attracted to Mohanlal’s character “Vincent Gomez” from the movie Rajavinte Makan. He wisehs to blindly follow the character and wants to become a smuggler like the character. A guy name Haider who works for the Mumbai underworld enters the scene. Louis and his friend Andy joins with Haider for a mission along with Freddy and Nicholas. What happens next forms the crux of the movie.
Kili Poyi was Vinay Govind’s first movie before Kohinoor and we can clearly witness his improvement as a director. Even though he failed to maintain a momentum in the first half, the second half was more engaging and thrilling which was the main saving factor in the movie. The script writers should have taken more care while preparing the screenplay for the initial half. Pradeesh M Varma’s cinematography was good and he was successful to a great extent in maintaining the whole mode of the movie. The editing by Arju Ben was also good. The music and background score by Rahul Raj was excellent. Art director Ajay Mangad deserves a special appreciation for recreating the 1980’s with uttermost care and perfection.
Asif Ali has improved a lot as an actor and you can clearly see it from his performance. Aju Varghese rocked as usual and Indrajith came out with another notable performance. Vinay Fort and Chemban Vinod also did their part well. The female leads didn’t nothing much to perform.
Kohinoor is a one time watchable flick which has its pros and cons. Vinay Govind is a director who has a great potential and let’s hope that will deliver something great in the future.
