Before starting the review about Krrish, I saw that this movie Krrish was loosely inspired by Maharaja(1998), a movie which starred Govinda and Manisha Koirala. Maharaja, did not end up being a successful film as at that time, as the concept of superheroes was alien at that time. Lots of things happened to be very common between Maharaja and Krrish -
• The superheroes, had their superpowers right from the time they were born.
• The superhero was hidden in a remote village in the mountains for over 20 years.
• The superhero was all alone in the village befriending animals.
• A girl, who was a reporter came and the superhero fell in love with her and followed her to her city.
• The superhero comes to know the truth about the girl and ends all love for her, but then the girl falls in real love with him.
• The superheroes hide their powers from everyone so that nobody gets to know about their reality.
• The villian sees the future that he will be killed by the superhero and to change the futre, kills somebody else thinking that he is the superhero.
• Maharaja(1998), was built on a budget of Rs. 1.5 Crore, whereas Krrish, had a budget of over Rs. 50 Crores.
Now, back to the review -
Story -
Krrish is the sequel of Koi Mil Gaya(2003), the movie in which "Jadoo", the Alien, gives the superpowers to Rohit Mehra(Hrithik Roshan 1) and these superpowers become hereditary and get transferred to Rohits son Krishna Mehra(Hrithik Roshan 2). Now, Krishna has the superpowers which Rohit used to have and it gets noticed by Krishnas Dadi(Rekha), who becomes over-protective and takes away Krishna to the mountains in a village near Manali. Krishnas Dadi, has a fear that with his superpowers, she might lose Krishna just like her son Rohit. Krishna, with all his superpowers, falls all alone in his village and all his friends leave him and go to cities. Now, all what Krishna does is play with his animal friends around and races with his horse and also ends up running faster than the horse itself. One day, Krishna, saves Priya(Priyanka Chopra), who with her group had come on a camping tour to Manali. Krishna, also happens to fall in love with Priya and takes her to meet his Dadi. The 1st half of the film is all about krishna falling in love with Priya.
The day, Krishna takes Priya to see his Dadi, Krishna gets to know that Priya has to leave back for Singapore. Priya, knows about Krishnas powers and invites him to Singapore so that he can showcase his powers and be world-famous in Singapore. Priya, falls in false love with Krishna and Krishna, mistakes it for real love and gets into a fight with his Dadi to go to Singapore. Now, Krishnas Dadi, tells the story of Rohit to Krishna and how his powers were misused by an evil Scientist, Dr. Siddharth Arya(Naseeruddin Shah), who tricked Rohit into making a computer which could see the future. Rohit, took 2 years to build the computer, but it required Rohits Retina and Heartbeat to work. Rohit, saves all his work in the form of notes as well. Once Rohit, starts the computer, he sees the future that his child will be delivered by Nisha(Preity Zinta), his wife and that he will phone his mother(Rekha) and tell her that his powers have been misused. Rohit, sees that it will happen in just 10 minutes and now Rohit, decides to break the computer and run away, but he couldnt run away despite breaking the computer. Now, Dr. Arya, "kills" Rohit and the news of this shocks his family back home and his wife Nisha dies with this shock and it makes his mother over-protective of their child Krishna.
Krishna, finally arrives in Singapore and this is where the real story of the film beings. In Singapore, Krishna makes friends with Christian Lee, who is also known as "Chris". Chris, needs some money to help cure his sister. Krishna, tries his best to hide his superpowers in Singapore even when fighting with goons. Now, Krishna goes into a circus and the circus catches fire. Here, Krishna sees a mask lying and becomes "Krrish" and saves the circus from the fire. This becomes a national news in Singapore and a nationwide search for the masked men starts. Krishna, then meets Chris and tells him that he should come out as the masked men as Chris is also a superhero as he is fighting for his sister. Chris, becomes "Krrish" and gets popular as the masked men. Here, Priya gets to know that Krishna is Krrish by some clips which she recorded in her digital camera and there, Krishna, gets to know about Priyas reality and that she was never in love with him. Here, Priya, gets moved by Krishnas innocence and falls in love with him.
Now Krishna, is about to leave for India and just then he gets to know from Vikram Sinha(Sharat Saxena), that his fater Rohit Mehra is still alive. Vikram Sinha, used to work with Rohit Mehra 20 years ago and that after breaking the computer, Rohit had to be saved as without his Retina and Heartbeat, the computer wouldnt work. Rohit, is then taken into a state of almost unconciousness for 20 years and the computer which could see the future is created by Dr. Aryas scientists in 20 years using Rohits notes. Now, Krishna gets to know about Dr. Aryas plans and has to save the world from the evil scientist Dr. Arya and also take his father Rohit Mehra back home. For doing all this, Krishna becomes Krrish and the movie becomes a total action movie in the end. The movie finally ends in such a way that another sequel is needed. Also, in the end, the people look up to the skies and say "Thank you, Jadoo".
Performances -
Hrithik Roshan as Krrish - Hrithik Roshan, delivers a career best performance as Krrish and its a perfoamance where only Hrithik could have best fitted in. His performances, both as Krishna Mehra and as Rohit Mehra were good enough including the stunts as Krrish. Action director Tony Chang has done a good job here.
Priyanka Chopra as Priya - Priyanka Chopra, has slight shades of grey early on in the movie, but overall her performance isnt that good in this Hrithik-dominated movie. Priyanka Chopra, has been wasted in this movie.
Rekha as Krishnas Dadi - Rekha, with slighly greying her hair, does a good performance as Krishnas Dadi in this movie. However, she does not have that much of a role in this movie.
Preity Zinta as Nisha - Preity Zinta, only has a guest apperance in the movie and she is shown mainly in the hospital deivering her baby.
Naseeruddin Shah as Dr. Siddharth Arya - Naseeruddin Shah, as usual gives a good performance even as a villainous character. Naseerudin Shah, in all these years has fit into various roles well and gives another good performance here.
Overall Description -
Krrish, is the Bollywood answer to all Hollywood action flicks like Superman, Spiderman, X-men, Batman, etc. A Hollywood movie lover is likely to dislike Krrish as it doesnt get anywhere close to those Hollywood movies in terms of action, possibly due to the lowly budget of Bollywood movies. However, the movie Krrish will be loved by Bollywood movie lovers and films like these and of this high quality are very rare in Bollywood. Krrish, ends up being a pure "Jadoo" movie for 3 hours. It is best watched with the whole family.
