Krrish, the sequel to the much-loved Koi... Mil Gaya, has taken almost three years of his life. But Roshan Sr’s efforts have paid off. Krrish is a revolution; it makes us realise that we can also make a superhero film.
Technically, Krrish is perhaps the best in Bollywood history, whether in terms of action, special effects, cinematography or sound. There’s little for the actors to do but deliver their bit and let Roshan Sr take the credit for a brilliant package.
Krrish or Krishna (Hrithik) is the new Superman — he has inherited the powers given to his father Rohit (of Koi...Mil Gaya) by Jadoo. He lives with his grandmother (Rekha) who is over-protective of him and secretive of his powers. Krishna meets Priya (Priyanka Chopra), a TV journalist based in Singapore, who wants to use him and his love for her to save her job.
Krrish comes to Singapore and finds out that his father is alive — scientist Siddhant Arya (Naseeruddin Shah) has ensured that he is. Rohit is the key to the unscrupulous scientist’s access to the future through a computer that responds to his heartbeat and eye movements. The story trails Krrish’s capers to save his father.
A tight screenplay makes Krrish a must-watch for children and their parents. Restraint is the director’s strength, he steadfastly resists all temptations to overdo the SFX. Like a true family film, Krrish has emotion, romance, humour, action and music, though the romance is low-key.
The sleek action sequences by Hong Kong-based Tony Ching Siu Tung and Sham Kaushal set a new trend, and combined with the special effects by US-based Marc Kolbe and Craig Mumma, they are a treat to watch.
Rajesh Roshan’s songs brings melodies back. The songs for a change do not rely much on techno music or fast beats. The background score by Salim-Sulaiman adds pace to the movie. When you have such a fast-paced movie, the background score is essential and the duo doesn’t disappoint.
A toned Hrithik excels showing his newly-acquired skills like martial arts and stunts. He plays father and son, putting in credible performance.
Krrish is a breath of fresh air into the staid world of Bollywood, much like Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black. Watch it for its own sake and feast your eyes on the spread Roshan Sr has laid out for you.
