KTM to Launch a Bigger beast than Duke 200

KTM DUKE 390 Specification and Design Review with Price detailsKTM unveiled the 390 Duke at the EICMA motorcycle show. It is scheduled for launch in the Indian market by March 2013 with an expected price tag of Rs 2 lakhs.

  • The KTM 390 Duke borrows styling from its elder siblings, the Duke 125 and Duke 200. However the vehicle sports a different color with the frame finished in KTM’s trademark orange color.




  • Even the hardware of the 390 Duke is identical to the Duke 200. Other than the 390 sticker on the tank and the bigger engine, there is no way you can differentiate both motorcycles.




  • The sharing of parts between multiple motorcycles helps in cost reduction. This strategy is similar to what Bajaj Auto has been doing with the Pulsars.




  • Bajaj Auto owns around 47% stake in KTM. Thus the Indian automaker will produce the 390 Duke at its Chakan facility.




  • The KTM 390 Duke is powered by a 373cc, DOHC engine which is a single-cylinder unit. It has 4-valves and is liquid-cooled.




  • This fuel injected motor produces 43 BHP of peak power at 9500 RPM and 35 Nm of peak torque at 7250 RPM. This engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.




  • The 390 Duke’s engine weighs just 36 kgs, which results in the dry weight of the motorcycle being just 139 kgs.




  • With so much power on tap and very little weight, the 390 Duke boasts of an insane power to weight ratio of 316 PS per tonne!




  • Performance is expected to be very strong, with the 390 Duke hitting 100 km/hr in less than 7 seconds, and top speed being around 170 km/hr.




  • At the front, the 390 Duke has 110/70/17 tyres while at the rear it has 150/60/17 tyres. These tyres will be of MRF make on the Indian version.




  • Braking duties are taken care by 300 mm disc at the front with 4-piston caliper while at the rear there is a 230 mm disc.




  • The KTM Duke 390 is offered with ABS. This feature will come to India as well. ABS and can be switched off for stunting.




  • The front suspension uses upside down forks while at the rear there is a monoshock. The suspension components come from suspension experts WP.




  • Although details about pricing are still to be revealed, one can expect the Duke 390 to be priced at around Rs. 2 lakhs. Expect strong performance from this bigger Duke which will make the rider go crazy. The 390 Duke will be joined by a Pulsar 375 too.
