Kunthakulam Bird Sanctuay

This is a very peaceful, uncrowded sanctuary set in very rural sylvan surroundings.

The caretaker here, Mr Pal Pandian is very knowledgable. He has won numerous awards for conservation. He has been here for more than 20 years and knows all the bird watching sites in and around Kundakulam.

The best time to visit is between Feb and April. You an see numerous birds even before you reach the sanctuary on your way there.

You can see Pelicans, Painted Storks, Open Billed Storks, Flamingos, Ibis(White, Black and Glassy), Herons(Pond and Grey), Terns(Gul-Billed and Whiskered), Pintails, Coots, Spotted Bill Ducks, Egrets(Cattle, Little), Cormorants, Kinfishers(white breasted), Kites(Pariah, Brahminy, Sparrow), Lapwings(Red-wattled and Yellow-wattled), Hoopoe, Indian Roller and many more.

Directions to the place;

From Tirunelveli, take NH-7 to Kanyakumari. After Tirunelveli, the highway has a bridge over a railway line. After this on the right there will be a SUNDARAM TEXTILE MILLS factory. After this there will be 2 bridges in quick succesion. Go over the 1st bridge. On the second bridge take the exit towards Naguneri(on your left). The exit turning will be very acute and similar to making a U-turn. Immediately after this(within 20 metres) take a right turn. There will be a level crossing right there. After the level crossing, there will be a Y fork.Take the left fork. Go on to a place called Moolkarpetai(about 14 kms away from the Y fork). Just as you enter Mollkarpettai take a right turn towards Kundakulam. The bird sanctuary is 6 kilometres away from Moolkarpetai. As you enter Moolkarpetai you will have a T junction. Take the right turn. The road will curve and end at the Bird Sanctuary.
