When Kareena didn't wore a Sari!

Attached to similarities with Fanaa or New York, Rensil D’Silva’s* KURBAAN is a message-giving thriller with a share of many flaws and answers that remain unquestioned till the end. Despite choosing 9/11 attack or simply, terrorism theme, KURBAAN is a smart thriller all because of the leads which can be best seen in 2009.

Kareena Kapoor *plays Avantika who takes onto another professor Ehsaan played by *Saif-Ali Khan who whirl their life in romance and eventually marry. Nesting their home in a sub-urban Indian neighborhood in New-York, Avantika finally learns that she is compelled into a risky and dangerous terrorist game played itself by her husband. She decides to take help of Riyaz played by Vivek Oberoi who end up joining the group. Avantika’s world comes crashing down when she accidentally runs into her neighbour’s dead body and eavesdrops into a terror conspiracy. What happens after that is what the film is all about.

The main problem with KURBAAN is that it tries to romantic film sometimes or a terrorist film other times as the plot is concurrent. Many questions remained unanswered. Why doesn’t Avantika call 911 or if Ehsaan is so-wanted terrorist in US, how does he roams around freely in the city. Or why does Riyaz decides to join the terrorist instead of alerting the cops? Such questions comes across our mind till the end, still not answered.

The core-love story takes too much time to grasp, or the part between Kirron Kher and Om Puri could have been better.

However, there are scenes which strike like a bolt in blue to you. Like-

  • When Ehsaan reveals his identity to Avantika

  • The climax which is highly terrific

Despite these earnest efforts, KURBAAN wastes it’s much time in the love story or answering the flaws which doesn’t succeed.

Director Renzil D’Silva has taken his best efforts to give us a terrific message not taking in consideration the mistakes. He should be to Karan Johar like what NIKHIL ADVANI was for KAL HO NAA HO. Extremely efficient in handling some parts, he still fails to correct the mistakes.

Music is good.’Shukran Allah’ and’Ali Maula’ are the best. What grips you into the film is the background score.

Much to it’s flaws, KURBAAN turns out to be a watch-able thriller because of it’s cast. If Saif plays that role with guaranteed 10/10 with an awe-inspiring character, Kareena succeeds in making you highly awed and happy.Welcome back Vivek after a long time! The actor has a superb comeback though he lacks the strength in some parts, overall, a successful comeback for him.

KURBAAN is like blood with less WBCs  but more with RBCs as it says’Some love-stories have blood in them’. Living the unanswered questions, KURBAAN is a superb thriller.
