After making three [flop] films in Bollywood, Balaji Telefilms, a production name you must be very much familiar with, because of its popular television soaps, is back with another film that begins with a ’K’.Balaji Telefilm`s/Ekta & Shobha Kapoor`s first film was a comedy, ”Kyoonki Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta”, which flopped badly at the box-office, followed by two other films, which also flopped, namely ”Kucch To Hai” and ”Krishna Cottage”, the former one a campus thriller while the latter one being a horror. This time Balaji Telefilms has come up with a comedy (again!), sorry not a comedy but a ’sex’ comedy, called ”Kya Kool Hai Hum”.Could you ever imagine that the production house which was popular for making family soap operas about our traditional values, ’sanskaars’, etc.would make a sex comedy?Well, that`s a different thing altogether, but does Ekta`s latest turn to a sex comedy film, hit`s the bull`s eye?
Balaji Telefilms. ”Kya Kool Hai Hum”, directed by Sangeeth Sivan, stars Tusshar Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh, Isha Koppikar, Neha Dhupia, Anupam Kher, Shoma Anand, Bobby Darling, Sushmita Mukherjee and Razzaq Khan.As usual, this film was also given lots of hype, in Ekta Kapoor`s saas-bahu, serials, like her previous films, but would this film flop like her previous films too, or will this one succeed to attract people and money to make it a hit? That`s to be seen.
This film tells us the story about two best of friends, Rahul (Tusshar Kapoor), and Karan (Riteish Deshmukh), who are very much fascinated by all the things people of their age do, such as making girlfriends, taking them on a date, and then taking them to….well you know where! They also want to be studs and have lots of girlfriends but unfortunately, both of them are losers and wannabees.Rahul wants to be a fashion designer, where as Karan just doesn`t want to do any work but he wants to get married with a girl of his dreams who would have both beauty and money. Both these guys are searching for the right girl, with whom they can have “fun” and romance, but little do they know that this search will lead them to nowhere else but only to trouble. The city is going through a terrible phase, as everyday the police department gets news of girls getting raped and then killed by a person. This serial killer is what now the police department is searching for.Dr.Screwala (Anupam Kher) is a criminologist whose help the police department takes in searching for the serial killer.Meanwhile, Rahul gets to know by a ‘pundit’ that if he will find a girl with a spot on her heart, she will prove to be lucky for her, so whenever he meets a girl, he tries to find a spot on her heart.Such actions of his make him the target of the police.Dr.Screwala and the police department get convinced that Rahul is the serial killer and now they want to prove this thing, to the whole world. They plan to do this with the help of a very rough and tough police officer, Ms.Urmila Mar-tod-kar (Isha Koppikar). The plan they make is very clever yet simple-Urmila will seduce Rahul and will catch him red-handed and in the end will show his darker side to the whole world.Urmila keeps on getting Rahul trapped and Rahul because of his ‘innocence’ keeps on getting trapped. On the other side, Karan`s life is also not going so well.Even he doesn`t know what`s happening to him.He tries to flirt with his boss` ex-girlfirend Kiran (Bobby Darling) and ends up making Kiran his girlfriend, but little does he know that Kiran is actually not a girl, but ‘something else’ (you know what!).Kiran`s parents don`t allow Kiran to meet Karan and ask Kiran`s cousin, Rekha (Neha Dhupia), a psychologist, to make Karan understand that he cannot marry Kiran.Incidentally, Rekha happens to be Karan`s ex-girlfriend, who now believes that Karan has become gay, so Rekha`s ultimate goal is to convert Karan from gay to a normal guy.So, now at one side Rahul is being mislead by Urmila while on the other hand, Karan too, is being mislead by a misunderstanding that Kiran is a girl and not a boy. Will both Rahul and Karan ever come to know what they are in for, and if they do then wouldn`t it be too late? What if Rahul ends up landing in the jail? What if Karan ends up marrying someone who is actually not a girl and the million dollar question-who is the real serial killer?
Tusshar Kapoor comes back after a long time, and he seems to be in complete form.He handles comedy very well and delivers all the witty dialogues quite hilariously. This film shows that he is good at comedy and if he is given a good role, he can carry it off, well. This role seems to fit him like a glove.
Riteish Deshmukh after showcasing his brilliant comic timing in ”Masti”, proves yet again that he is very good at comedy and that he is also improving with every other release. This film will really help the actor to get more and more good movies and there is no doubt, that the guy is really talented.A very natural and confident performance, indeed!
Isha Koppikar is also really funny as the rough and tough lady inspector who turns into a seductress. She was last seen in ”Girfriend” and she made a good comeback with this film.Even she proves that she can also act and is not just an item number girl.
Neha Dhupia doesn`t get much scope to perform but in her not-so-meaty role to she does a good job.Her scenes with Riteish Deshmukh and Anupam Kher are good.
Anupam Kher reminds you of his old days, when he used to make us laugh with his excellent comical performances. This time too he will really entertain you, after such a long hiatus. He gives an amazing performance, after a very long time, and it’s a treat watching such a brilliant actor, back in form, after so long.
Razzaq Khan also provides you with lots of entertaining moments.Shoma Anand, Sushmita Mukherjee and Rajpal Yadav, lend able support.Bobby Darling, is his/her (whatever), usual self!
Sangeeth Sivan makes a comeback as a director after the disastrous ”Chura Liya Hai Tumne”.His latest film looks more likeable than his previous one and he has handled some moments, very well. The scenes where Rahul and Karan try to flirt with different girls but end up being losers are funny. The scenes, in which Rahul starts his search for a girl with a spot on her heart and when he finally sees such a girl, are entertaining. All the scenes of Dr.Screwala are really hilarious and the film gets interesting when Inspector Urmila Martodkar, starts seducing Rahul. One sequence where Urmila seduces Rahul and her dress falls down is truly funny. On the negative side, the climax seems to be hurried and it is somehwta disappointing. Also, the comedy gets slapstick in the second half and over-the-top but nevertheless the film succeeds in making you laugh.
