MOVIE REVIEW : LA LA LAND
Musicals are the most powerful means to express intricate human emotions to which words cannot do justice. In a world, where musicals have become a rare thing to watch, there comes a movie, a musical, a musical about movies.
LA LA LAND directed by Damien Chazzelle is a visual delight. I am not much into romantic musicals but this one caught me completely off guard. La La Land will win over even the most ardent romance haters. La La Land is an absolute gem and certainly vies for the best film of 2016.
It is the story of an aspiring jazz pianist ( Ryan Gosling) and a struggling actor ( Emma Stone) . Their paths cross again and again in a montage of beautifully choreographed jazz numbers as they embark upon a journey in the City of Stars to achieve their dreams.
Right from the opening sequence of the movie shot on a Los Angeles highway till the last number in the jazz club, there is not even a single moment where you’d want to take your eyes and ears of this masterpiece. The music by Jason Hurwitz is dreamy and makes you float in the air. The story isn’t a strong point - its simplicity is its strength.
The camerawork by Linus Sandgren is just class-apart. There are no words to express the level of aesthetics in the movie. Ryan Gosling is charming and gets you swooning, but it is Emma who has won it all. Each and every emotion she nails with perfection. The performance, the chemistry, everything is top-notch.
Overall, LA LA LAND is not a movie, it is an enchanted experience. It is a cinema that’ll restore your faith on cinema. It brings the old-school class back. It is a visual form of a beautiful poetry.
There is no doubt that La La Land will sweep the Oscars this time. Definitely the front-runner for the Oscar for Best Motion Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Score, LA LA LAND is surely the best thing that happened to movies in 2016.
