I never thought it would take 3 years and the same director to make a comedy that is not just some mindless sequence of scenes following one after another, instead it’s a meaningful cinema laced with entertainment. The movie I saw then was “Munnabhai MBBS” and now after 3 years “Lage Raho Munnabhai”. And in between all we got from our comedy filmmakers was movies filled with cheap dialogues and irritating scenes. Thank God, Rajkumar Hirani decided to make “Lage Raho Munnabhai” after “Munnabhai MBBS”. It’s high time director’s realize that even a comedy movie needs a good script and careful direction. And in case of these 2 movies Rajkumar Hirani inspite of being skillful was very careful. Careful, because there was every chance of making mistakes while handling a complicated story and trying to make people laugh.
If I tell you two words “Comedy” and “Gandhiji”, your first reaction will be “What are you talking abt?” as they just don’t go hand in hand. Forget about hand in hand , they just don’t go together, period. But, that’s were our master craftsmen Rajkumar Hirani comes in and delivers a product that is filled with entertainment , but revolves around teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. It seems like an impossible job , but the job is well done.
I won’t say that the movie is completely flawless , some scene get a little too emotional and the direction looses grip on the fun part around the characters, but we cannot forget the fact that the movie is trying to bring forward the teaching of a person “Gandhiji”, whose mere mention makes people say “Paka Maat Yaar” . So, any flaw what so ever, is too small in front of the giant brave step Rajkumar Hirani has taken to make this movie.
Coming to the performances Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi are as good as they were in “Munnabhai”, but Arshad warsi didn’t get much footage on the screenplay this time. Vidya balan was definitely the best choice for the role. It wasn’t a very performance oriented role or anything , but she delivers what was expected out of the character. Coming to Boman Irani, what can you say abt this guy, I mean he is coming very close to the likes of actors like Anupam Kher. Put him in any role and he is that character on screen, you forget Boman Irani.
Music by Shantanu Moitra is good, songs “Hai re Hai Munnabhai” and "Samjho Ho hi gaya" are very entertaining and very well picturised. Songs are well sequenced and they don’t really stop the flow of the movie. I must say the editor of the movie deserves 10 on 10, as handling so many characters and giving everyone their space on screen is not an easy job. The only character who could have had little more scenes was “circuit”. But, all said and done, this is a movie which may click with you or may not click , but you can’t miss this.
