Lakshya misses target

Title :

Review : Two thigns about Lakshya:

  1. This movie is going to be a hit

  2. The movie is fairly disappointing.

Lakshya has been one Hindi movie I had been eagerly awaiting for a fairly long time. After the cool and sensible Dil Chahta hai, Farhan Akthar had made it to the top 5 of new good director’s list. Lakshya is a disappointment.

The broad storyline is as follows:

Karan (Hritik Roshan) is a rish, decently intellegent and smart youngish kid who does not know what to do in life. All his friends decide their career paths and this starts bothering him about what he should do in life. Preity Zinta is his girlfriend who is quite active in college politics and dreams to be a journalist. A confused Karan applies in the army alongwith a friend and after an argument with his father (Boman Irani in an incosistent, thankless and old fashioned ’’ career’’ father role), Hritik actually joins the army. He oviously cannot take the rigourous, tough disciplined army life and runs away home. Preity Zinta hears about this and refuses to meet him, so he goes back to the training academy and even passes out with a medal. Kargil conflict erupts at the same time and he is posted in Kargil. Prity in the meantime gets engaged to a really stupid looking guy and then breaks off the engagement when she realises that the stupid guy is really stupid and goes to Kargil to cover the war. (She is a hot shot TV journo by then). Hritik’s regiment is led by one major Damle ( Amitabh Bachachn who looks really old) and manages to win an important point from the Pakistanis who keep on calling each other ’’ janaab’’. Preity and Hritik are reunited.

Now some good things about the movie:

The ’spirit’ of the movie is really different and interesting and it is definitely better than the stupis karan johar and shahrukh khan movies which are released these days. Atleast it tries to capture the uneasiness which a well to do youth feels about an aimless life.

The photography and warscenes are really stunning compared to Hindi movies and they do not look like the J.P Dutta movies where you get a feeling that people are playing ’’War War’’ under floodlights The humor in some scenes is really good without being loud (Remember the Dhaava scene during Hritik’s training) The background score is AWESOME.

Now the bad part - The charecterisation is very weak. The motivation behind Hritik’s becoming patriotic always suspect. Prity Zinta’s charecter is fairly underdeveoped and there is no reason for her to dump poor Hritik, get engaged to some other guy and fall in love with Hritik again. Actually she come out as a frivilous person. Others are really insignificant and good actors like Amitabh, Boman Irani, Om puri and Sushant Singh are completly wasted. Farhan, please take inspiration from Ramgopal Varma on developing supporting cast. The basic problem is at no point do you see The uneasiness of not knowing ’’what to do’’ killing Hritilk and the reason for his suddenly becoming dedicated. A good point of reference would be Vivek Oberoi in Yuva.

  • The movie is too long

  • Please spare the poor audience of the jingoism. Scenes where an army guy shouts at Preitiy Zinta about why the army wants peace, Hritik promising Amitabh that he will unfurl Tirana on the peak or he will die, the great song where all the army guys sing and decide to win are seen in numerous films and any sensible director should do away with them

-In the acting department, Hritik Roshan is sincere but genuinely lacks talent. Not knowing what to do does not mean making faces like the retarted charecter from Koi Mil Gaya and asking ’’Main Aisa kyon hoon’’ 37 times.

Hritik, once sincere request: PLease find a decent dress designer and Hair Stylist because you are consistely bad in that department. Preity’s role is insipid and other are not worth mentioning. Amitabh looks so old that one gets the feeling that he has one foot in the grave and will die anytime of exhaustion and old age.

All in all the movie lacks conviction and we expect better effort Farhan Akhtar next time. See only if you do not have anything else to do
