Well, I must say I went to the theatre with very low expectations and came out quite moved.
Farhan Akhtar has worked the magic of Dil Chahta Hai into his very latest creation, Lakshya. And I think Hrithik has found his cinema Lakshya Although I am not much of a Hrithik fan, I would like to say that this is definitely his best film, yes, better than Koi Mil Gaya, (in my opinion he acted like a retarded child rather than a 12 year old boy in that particular movie).
Preity Zinta served merely for the purpose of carrying on the Bollywood tradition of a love story in each and every movie and was utterly unneccessary. I was thoroughly annoyed when the scenes reached a climax and then it was quickly switched to her unimportant life of a journalist. However, even though her role was not needed, Zinta carried out her part to the fullest, and the acting was good on her part. The Big B, although his acting was superb, I felt that Akhtar did not use Bachan to his full potential, but never the less the great Amitabh Bachanan once again worked wonders in his minor but ever important role.
A wonderful job was done by all who played soldiers in the army, and much of it was quite realistic, making the movie much more emotion-tingling. Another part that I personally enjoyed was the flashback, and am forced to admit that Hrithik did well in that portion. However, his hair coughwigcough was quite unusual and unfortunately drew attention to the fact that he is balding just like his father. (Like baap like beta no?) Javed Akhtars songs were very good, and the tunes were quite a foot-tapper, however halfway through, my attention was lacking and I found myself playing an eager game of Find Hrithiks Double Thumb rather than listening to the actual song.(That may just be due to my small attention span so Im not sure on that part) Another distraction was Amitabhs multi-colored moustache, and I found it fascinating that the shades of gray change color and position in every scene. The overall patriotic theme was very moving even if it was very unoriginal, its the same Indians vs. Pakis idea, but some dialogues are very offensive to Pakistani viewers, and were I felt they were very uncalled for, even though I am not Pakistani.
If you are watching this movie in the theater it is quite hard to fall asleep both because of its intriguing plot, and because of the never-ending, drawn out scenes of gunfire in which the shots fired are very loud. But I guess that makes you feel as if you are right there with them no? But as I warning I must say that those with sensitive eardrums should not watch this film in the theater. Another point to be made is the fact that this movie is not for everyone, and Im not saying just those with weak eardrums. Even though the previews show Lakshya as Hrithiks usual happy go lucky film choice, it definitely is not, and much of it is quite devastating especially because it slows you down and reminds you of the fact, that this story is somewhat true in parts of India, and that many people are really losing their lives. All in all, Lakshya is a good movie and is definitely worth a watch.
