LAKSHYA meaning the Goal. Farhan Akhtar whose directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai won laurels for him came up with his next venture, a hard-hitting film LAKSHYA. And with this film certainly, Farhan Akhtar has proved that he is among the finest directors in Bollywood today.
THE PLOT
The film starts off with Karan Shergill (Hritik Roshan) joining a cantonment headed by Sunil Damle (Amitabh Bachhan). When his colleagues (Sushant Singh, Raj Zutshi and others) ask him about the photograph of a TV anchor, Romila Dutta (Preity Zinta) in his wallet, he remembers his youth....
While most of his friends have already decided their lakshya in life, Karan is still pondering over what his career would be. A father (Boman Irani) who has lost hopes about his son and who wants his son to continue his business, feels hurt when Karan says he wants to join the army.
He gets selected and goes to the Defence training academy. And this is where the problems pop up. A son from a well-to-do family finds it difficult to cope with the discipline, and runs away from the hostel. This enrages Romila who tells him not to meet her ever again.
The father feels triumphant and keeps taunting Karan after which he resolves to fulfil his dream, achieve his lakshya. And then comes in an assignment, to conquer a peak in the Indian territory which has been taken over by the militants. What follows is a thrilling and vivid portrayal of bravery.
Pros
The movie does not rely upon Pak-bashing dialogues. Still, the dialogues and the screenplay by Javed Akhtar is super! 2. The first half focusses on a confused youth while the second half speaks of a brave adulthood.
It should be noted that the film is totally unbiased. The film does not speak of chauvinism but Bravery.
The war scenes at the night are very realistic and it leaves you with a feeling as if you are right there in the battlefield.
The music is a big plus. The songs and their lyrics actually stay with you even after you leave the cinema hall.
The strong performances by each and every actor stuns you. Hritik and Preity top them all.
The cinematography by Christopher Popp is THE BEST and certainly deserves an award. Especially the rockclimbing scene reminds you of MI2.
The scenes at the defence training academy are superb! The climax is very well picturised and more importantly, it is not made to look filmi.
Cons
Very few of them I think, but yes.. the length of the film is a minus.
An actor of Amitabh Bachhans calibre is seriously wasted.
On the whole, Lakshya has it all! Three cheers to Farhan Akhtar and his team for coming with a completely different, attractive and meaningful film... LAKSHYA!
