After many years I got a chance to see Lamhe again. I was really excited about it. I remembered having bunked my lectures at college for seeing this movie and I had really loved it (I was 16 then, I guess). Lamhe back then was a movie considered to be too mature for the Indian audience. But personally, I dont think so. It is more a matter of double standards than anything else.
Lamhe conveys the message of love being eternal and knowing no boundaries including age. It is a story about those beautiful moments (lamhe) when some one falls in love. In situations of a failure, some get over it and move on and some of us hold on to it for many years sometimes till our dying day. This story is about the latter kind.
Anil, when he is a young man falls in love with Sridevi who is older than him and is the daughter of his late parents friend. But Sridevi already has a man in her life and he is heart-broken when he comes to know about it. Sri gets married to the love of her life. But in an accident she and her husband dies, leaving behind a daughter. This daughter grows up into a beautiful girl (Sri devi again) who is in love with Anil. But all these years, Anil has still held on to the memories of her mother and is still in love with her. What follows is Destiny!
Pardon me guys, but I was little perturbed by Sridevi. I mean this is the same lady I loved watching in my other life. But I dont know if it is part of growing up and your likes and dislikes changing with it, I felt her acting though versatile since she has to play two different roles (mother and daughter), a little annoying at times. But overall I would still say that she is quite good. I think Anil comes up with a commendable, mature and restrained performance. I liked Anupam Khers attempt at humor too. He is a versatile actor. The other commendable supporting cast is Waheeda Rahman who does a good job. Deepak Malhotra did a cameo debut in the movie as Sridevis lover/husband.
The first half of the movie is based in Rajasthan and the rest shuttles between London and Rajasthan. The hawelis (Mansions) and the sets are traditional, spectacular and tasteful. The music of the movie is great. The songs like Kabhi main kahoon and Yeh Lamhe will be remembered for years to come. Then there is this medley of old Hindi songs that Sridevi and Anupam Kher perform to appease Anil which is quite funny! Overall, a good movie with a good story line which will be remembered for its difference!
