Review : this is a movie made by lata mangeshkar herself in the late 80s / early 90s. unfortunately the movie was made ahead of its time (ironically it was about a spirit who was caught in a time trap). I remember the movie as haunting with stark images of rajasthan and a soul stirring performance by dimple. however, what stayed with me for a long time to come was the haunting music by hridyanath mangeshkar. each song was a classic by itself and the roots of the music were firmly entrenched in the classical mould. add to that gulzars lyrics and you have an album which like the spirit in the movie.... is in a time trap... and stays with you forever. while yaara silli silli remains the most famous track of the album... it wouldnt be wrong to say that each song is a like an exquisitely crafted piece of jewellery. surmayi shyam is easily one of the most uncomplicated melodies ever composed and brings with it the fragrance of the night everytime you listen to it. when translated the song says the fragrant evening comes by...akin to... the soft breathing sounds of haunting spiritis. then you have kesariya balamma.... which spins you into the royal nautch house... no words or comparisons would do justice to latas rendering of this classic. asha bhonsle once more proved that when it came to classical music she was second to none.... and it wouldnt be wrong to say her rendering of jhottey naina is at par with latas vocals. suniyo ji is another lata masterpiece.... the sad part about albums like these is that each song is a masterpiece by itself and if each of these songs was in different albums... the popularity of the numbers would be tenfold. finally you have mein ek saddi se bathi hun which is again a lata showpiece. for me the best composition in this remarkable album was kesariya. the sheer range, the highs and lows... of this song made it unforgetable. its unfortunate that movies like lekin which were made sincerely and had so much going for them wer outright rejects in favour of mediocre rubbish. I wonder how lekin would have done if it had been made and released today.... to my mind this movie apart from the music off course also stands testimony to one of the most consumate actress in indian cinema......dimple. see the movie if you can to get a glimpse of how some masterpieces were created in the same era as govinda and gang were doing PT excercises on hill slopes.
